Seed tomorrow with wise choices today!

How many detours in life have literally railroaded you from reaching your desired goals? When you come to a crossroad do you pause, stay calm, breathe and remember where you were going so you can stay on track? I wish I could tell you I always do that. However, more often than not, I find it too easy to get distracted, diverted, preoccupied and then completely derailed.

You’re on the road to success when you realize that failure is merely a detour. – William Milnes

We’re 2 months or about 60 days into 2010. Remember how you swore this would be your breakthrough year? This would be the year that mattered? Okay, so you didn’t hit your goal . . . it’s not time to be remorseful about your sidetracked adventure. Let’s use this diversion to practice resiliency and persistence.

Recently, I’ve been interviewing exceptional leaders about they’ve done to be effective. One of the common denominators: rapid recovery from a fall. We all make mistakes and get sidetracked. The exception is to course correct quickly. Learn from leaders who have helped others excel and acknowledge the detour, reset the time line to your goals, sit with the lessons of the distraction, recalibrate and quickly get back on track!

Many of us who have raised children have heard this old elementary school story-problem:

Three frogs were sitting on a log. Two decided to jump off. How many are left?
The correct answer: Three . . . Just because they decided to jump doesn’t mean they did.

Ah, the process of decisions. Without action, they typically turn into frustration, angst and regret. Decisions can be mind-changing. Action can be life-changing. Harvey MacKay says it this way:

People begin to become successful the minute they decide to be.

Then, we need to ACT on those decisions. So, what action is most important for you today?

Have you ever read anything so startling that it took your breath away? Something so profound that it caused a pause you knew you’d never forget? Something so painful that it created a mental shift that would forever change you? This one from Ben Franklin did it for me:

Hell is when who you are meets who you could have been.

Ouch! With a clearer vision, more growth, different decisions and less confusion, who might I have become? Then I remember: It’s never too late to become who you might have been.

What’s beckoning your attention today? What’s calling you to be more you? What inspires you to want to do and become your personal best? Perhaps it’s time to pay attention to the inner nudge and take a step in that direction. One small, yet purposeful step.

Move boldly into the direction of your dreams. – Henry David Thoreau

Seed tomorrow with wise choices today!

I recently had the wonderful opportunity to design and deliver a few programs for the Michigan Township Association. So many of the leaders I worked with gave me hope for the future of the communities they so passionately desire to lead into a greater tomorrow. A few months ago, as I roamed a quaint, remote up-state Michigan lodge where some of the sessions were held I couldn’t help but giggle as I read this on the wall of the pub:

An old cowboy saying: It’s best to taste your words before you spit them out.

Ah, the glory of mental filters! The next time I’m feeling emotionally connected to what I’m about to say, I think I’ll savor those words before speaking them. I’m certain it’ll be in everyone’s best interest.
