Seed tomorrow with wise choices today!

I’m communicating with you from Shanghai this week (technology like this is still magic to me) where I’m interviewing the insightful, exceptionally competent, compassionate and wise Vice President of HR for General Motors, Asia, Nancy Owens. And, I can’t help but be moved when surrounded by so many ancient Chinese thoughts. How about this one:

Be not afraid of growing slowly; be afraid only of standing still.

There’s really no such thing as static living on Earth. We either evolve forward or shrink. And, the minute we begin each focused, deliberate journey toward our desired outcome we can expect almost immediate struggles. As ancient Chinese wisdom states:

A gem is not polished without rubbing, nor a man perfected without trials.

The profound and precious gift of life asks us to envision a future worth living and take the required action to turn that vision into reality. Our trials are optimized when we grapple with enough intensity to hone turmoil into treasure. Craft confusion, pain and turbulence into insight, strength and astute discernment with improved judgment. Let’s not hesitate today. Let’s not stand still, shrivel, or avoid the necessary internal battles that give us depth, texture and wisdom. Daily, we can mindfully sculpt ourselves into jewels of intention.

It’d be fun to give myself the luxury of watching Dancing with the Stars more regularly, since I really like seeing people progress as they stretch themselves to excel with such great passion and discipline. This Monday night, designer Vera Wang said of contestant Evan Lysacek:

Evan is willing to learn. And, if you’re willing to learn, life is limitless.

Hum, both Vera and Evan appear to be living out at least a few of their dreams. And, according to Ms. Wang, it has to do with learning. So, how’s your learning lately? Although I think I’m committed to learning on a daily basis, recent results with a few important goals suggest otherwise. So, time to refocus, recommit and reinvigorate my learning. How about you?

Have you created and continue to cultivate a strong, empowering support system for yourself? Friends, family, colleagues, mentors and business partners all report receiving sustenance from others who lift them in times of turmoil, comfort them in moments of grief and sustain them during spells of mental or spiritual draught. Joseph Campbell, mythologist, writer, lecturer and my favorite go-to guy when I’m struggling, wrote:

When the world seems to be falling apart, hang on to your own ideals and find kindred spirits. That’s a rule of life.

We must ultimately face our inner work alone; however, some things are just better to wrestle through with others. If you’re struggling, hold tight to your ideals and those who support you. If you’ve neglected to develop a support system of strength, today’s the day to look around and reach out to people you will call kindred spirits tomorrow.

Seed tomorrow with wise choices today!

Have you found yourself complaining about something lately? Criticizing how something is done, about who does what, or babbling about what should be? If you hear yourself say, “Someone should do something about that” . . . that someone is you!

There are two primary choices in life: to accept conditions as they exist, or accept the responsibility for changing them. – Denis Waitley

I often have to remind myself: What is, is. If you want something to be different than it currently is, know what you can change about it, know where you have some control or influence, and know where you have no control whatsoever. If you’ve found yourself complaining, perhaps today’s the day to accept, let go, or change.
