Wednesday Wisdom

Seed tomorrow with wise choices today!

Last week, as I was working in Arizona and studying the rich history of our Native Americans, I came across this message from a tribe with a history closer to where I live in the Midwest:

When you arise in the morning, give thanks for the morning light, for your life and strength. Give thanks for your food, and the joy of living. If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies with yourself.
~ Tecumseh, Shawnee Chief

Oooh, the sharp reality of personal accountability!

There are varying speculations about why the Shawnee Tribe migrated from South Carolina to the colder climate of the north. However, most theories report a forced move rather than one by choice. In the midst of challenging change far greater than anything I’ve had to face, Tecumseh reminded his people of the importance of gratitude, because it sustains. So, what’s my excuse for not remaining grateful . . . and what’s yours?

Life is calling . . . Today’s the day!

Seed tomorrow with wise choices today!

I’m working in Arizona this week and can’t help but study the rich history and culture of the people. Over a thousand years ago the Navajo Tribe began to travel from Northwestern Canada and Alaska to the southwest United States. Today, they’re the largest tribe of Native Americans in the States. Upon arrival to their new home, they met Pueblo farmers who taught them new ways of cultivating the land, weaving, making clothes and producing art. For decades, learning and change were a constant for the tribe’s people.

War Chief Manuelito, was the first leader to unite all Navajo tribes and to strongly advocate education as the way to advance their children in the White nation that was quickly overwhelming their way of life. I didn’t realize that he is credited to be the originator of the well known message:

We are not human beings here on Earth having a spiritual experience, but spiritual beings here to have human experiences.

His words cause me to think about how reframing our existence as spiritual beings can help to apply more grace and compassion to challenging human experiences that pale in comparison to what many of Chief Manuelito’s people endured, and many still endure today.

Seed tomorrow with wise choices today!

Have you ever wanted to do something, but withered at the thought of actually doing it? And, did you notice how that thought stopped you from taking even one small step forward? Have you wanted to make a change, but debilitated yourself by counter-productive thinking, and therefore missed out on any possibility of splendid improvement? Do you dream of transcending your current situation, yet frustrate yourself by not taking action? Do you find yourself making excuses rather acting the future you want into existence? Me too. In fact, I did it to myself yesterday, then I read:

And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom
. – Anaïs Nin

Be honest. Which is really more risky – making choices and taking action to create the life you desire, or staying exactly where you are? Perhaps it feels safe at the moment to remain in a comfortable, taut world; however, that choice doesn’t create a life worth living. Perhaps today’s the day to begin to bloom?! If so, what’s your first step? One small step at a time can lead to the process of transformation . . .

Life is calling . . . Today’s the day!

Seed tomorrow with wise choices today!

I just returned from a long stint of working out of town. It’s now time to unpack, catch up on everything that piled up while I was gone, and repack for an even longer stretch of work out of the country. Have you ever been overwhelmed by all you have to do and not enough time to do it? In the middle of trying to stay centered as I attempt to get everything done, I’m grateful to remember the concept of prioritization and making choices based on what Coach Lou Holtz referred to as W.I.N.

The W.I.N. method: What’s Important Now.

Today, throughout the day, I will pause and ask myself . . . what’s really important right now? (which at this moment means hitting the “publish” button and giving my husband a hug of gratitude for all he is)

Think about how asking the what’s really important right now question can help you focus your attention on what matters most in your life, therefore yielding a high return on your invested energy.

Today, let’s see what a difference it will make to put first things first. Let’s major on the majors and not get caught up or consumed by the minors.

Life is calling . . . Today’s the day!
