Wednesday Wisdom

Seed tomorrow with a wise Spirit today!

So often I’m in awe of ancient wisdom. And, equally amazed by how few people apply the insight centuries later. How about this one:

You cannot have a proud and chivalrous spirit if your conduct is mean and paltry, for whatever a man’s actions are, such must be his spirit. – Demosthenes (384 BC-322 BC)

Do you know anyone who doesn’t understand the link between their attitude, their actions, their Spirit and their results in life?
Hopefully, that someone isn’t you . . .

Wednesday Wisdom

Seed tomorrow with wise leadership today!

Because we have the ability to communicate ideas and events all over the world in real time, we’re able to “experience” struggles, suffering and success of people previous generations would have felt more removed from. The recent dramatic mission to rescue 33 miners in Chile caught the world’s attention. It’s been estimated that up to a billion people watched their escape.

Perhaps it’s because my father was a coal miner, or because I’m human, or because I want to believe in miracles that I felt compelled to pray intensely for each of the miners and their families.

Who can even imagine 2 months of such an experience? Franklin Lobos, a former football player who turned to mining later in life said, It was the toughest match of my life.

And, what did you observe, hear and feel about leadership that was different from the behaviors of leaders in recent disasters? Although the men argued about the order of their ascent, in the end, it was the shift foreman, Luis Urua, who was last to leave the San Jose mine. As he stepped out of the shaft he said to his nation’s president, who was awaiting his arrival, I hand this shift over to you and hope this never happens again.

President Sebastian Pinera was forefront in helping with strategy, technology and communications. He and his wife, Cecilia Morel extended strength, honor and hope in the time of need. As the first miners emerged, their President hugged them and said, Welcome to life!

As I tearfully watched the last man up I thought to myself: Wake up! Don’t wait for a catastrophe to accept life’s welcome! Today’s the day. I think I’ll cease it with gratitude for so many lessons.

Life is calling . . . Today’s the day!

Seed tomorrow with wise thinking today!

Our daughter, Courtney and I had three weeks of non-stop wonder and awe in Eastern Europe. Visiting relatives who live in a system that provides little opportunity to reach beyond their difficult existence was hard to observe, hear and feel. The last leg of our adventures took us to Berlin, where we found ourselves in tears as we walked the streets that taught us the history of people who fought fiercely for freedom and paid prices that startle my soul.

Then, I traveled from Berlin to work in Washington DC. As I write, I look out my hotel window and see the Washington Monument, which was created to thank George Washington for helping to carve a new kind of a republic country where (and I quote) “all men were treated as equal.

For many, freedom is not just a concept. And, as the saying goes, freedom isn’t free. Today, around the world (including within the great nation I call home) people cry, fight and hope for freedom. Today, I won’t take mine for granted.

Seed tomorrow with wise actions today!

We’re on the last leg of our great adventure in Brno, the second largest city in the Czech Republic and wine country of Moravia (yum). As I sit and sip a glass of wine, I reflect on this same time last week.

The Russian word for grandmother is babichka, so we affectionately call them baba. Daily, as we rolled out of bed to boil water for coffee, our Ukrainian baba had already warmed food for the pigs and had fed them along with the goats, chickens, the cat and the dog. She had also typically completed some other necessary task like cleaning the pig stall or the outhouse, harvesting bushels from the garden, and preserving the harvest for winter nourishment. Her distended face and swollen hands, chiseled by decades of hard work, pain, suffering, hope fear, disappointment and joy tell her story with depth and accuracy.

Last Wednesday, as we comfortably sipped wine in the late afternoon, baba insisted on taking the goats to graze on fresh grass. As we watched them faithfully follow her to the top of the hill, words she shared earlier echoed in my mind:

Life is movement . . . I’ll rest when I die.

I‘ll never look at work or relaxation the same.

Life is calling . . . Today’s the day!
