Seed tomorrow with wise character today!

Few of us will devote ourselves to a cause as Martin Luther King Jr. did in his shortened lifetime. In his honor, our little town of Milford remembered his noble life with a parade and recollections of the significant legacy he left.

Six months before his assassination, he spoke to a group of high school students in Philadelphia. He began: I want to ask you a question, and that is: What is your life’s blueprint?

And when you discover what you will be in your life, set out to do it as if God Almighty called you at this particular moment in history to do it. Don’t just set out to do a good job. Set out to do such a good job that the living, the dead or the unborn couldn’t do it any better.

If it falls your lot to be a street sweeper, sweep streets like Michelangelo painted pictures, sweep streets like Beethoven composed music, sweep streets like Leontyne Price sings before the Metropolitan Opera. Sweep streets like Shakespeare wrote poetry. Sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will have to pause and say: Here lived a great street sweeper who swept his job well. If you can’t be a pine at the top of the hill, be a shrub in the valley. Be the best little shrub on the side of the hill.

Be a bush if you can’t be a tree. If you can’t be a highway, just be a trail. If you can’t be a sun, be a star. For it isn’t by size that you win or fail. Be the best of whatever you are.

May we all live by doing our best, that we may be judged by the content of our character . . .

Seed tomorrow with wise umph today!

The snow’s falling here in Michigan. The ground is crisp and icy; the frigid view outside recoils me. Nothing sounds better than a crackling fire, a warm blanket and cocooning for days. Too often I’d like to do nothing but wrap myself in a cover and stare at dancing flames for days with a cup of hot tea. However, right now, there are things to be done. So, I remember words I read from a friend and colleague, Linda Swindling:

The difference between try and triumph is a little umph.

So, I contemplate my “umph” this morning – my “why” – my reason for wanting to reinvigorate my umph when I don’t really feel like it. I look around and see pictures of my family, memories of life experiences that have defined me and feel grateful for all I’ve learned. So, a little umph surfaces and I get on with writing this passage, then off to complete the rest of what needs to be done today. How about you? What’s the why that activates your umph?

Seed tomorrow with wise action today!

A whole bunch of years ago W. Clement Stone wrote:

I think there’s something more important than believing: ACTION! The world is full of dreamers; however, there aren’t enough who move ahead and take concrete steps to actualize their vision.

Hum, I can hear the old Motown song in the background wishin’ and hopin’ and thinkin’ and prayin’ . . .

What have you been pondering, perhaps playing with in your dreams and procrastinating about that you know requires action? You’re not alone! As we welcome the New Year, how about inserting specific action into a well-thought-out plan to succeed?!

DOING must follow wanting, hoping, believing, praying and planning.

Happy New Year BONUS! Consider ACTION around Audrey Hepburn’s words of wisdom:
For attractive lips speak words of kindness.

For lovely eyes seek out the good in people.

For a slim figure share your food with the hungry.

For beautiful hair let a child run his/her fingers through it once a day.

For poise walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone.

People, even more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed and redeemed; never throw out anyone.

Remember, if you ever need a helping hand you will find one at the end of each of your arms.

As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands; one for helping yourself, and the other for helping others.

Life is calling . . . Today’s the day!
