Seed tomorrow with wise direction today!

Have you had those days when you simply yearned for a break? A time when everything felt busy, too busy to actually take it all in and find joy in what you were experiencing? Just as I was about to have a bit of a pity party over having too much to do with too little time to do it all, I read the words of Oliver Wendall Holmes that I had tucked in my wallet:

Greatness is not where we stand, but in what direction we are moving. We must sail sometimes with the wind and sometimes against it but sail we must, and not drift, nor lie at anchor.

I decided to take that break with a half an hour of meditation, then back to the clear direction of the work in front of me! In what direction is the activity of your life taking you today?

Seed tomorrow with wise deliberation today!

I’m home for a week and find myself frantically trying to get all the things done that I can’t get to while I’m out out of town. So, my daily routine of exercise, meditation, remaining “present” and “on purpose” are completely neglected! Do you let this happen as well?

Then, while writing a report for a client (in between cleaning, laundry and gardening) I ran across this message and stopped the nonsense immediately:

First you must ask yourself what you would be; and then do what you have to do, without exception. Life is a grindstone. Whether it wears you down or polishes you up depends on what YOU are made of.

I’m not feeling polished by the pressure right now . . . yet grateful for the reminder. So, it’s time to slow down as I continue to check things off the “to do” list and give attention to each task at hand in a more deliberate, purposeful way. How’s your focus lately?

Seed tomorrow with wise learning today!

I’m blessed to meet, work with and learn from exceptional leaders all over the world. The louder I listen to them, the more texture and depth is added to my life.

Last week I had the opportunity to work with Alex Cavazos, the Director of Rooms for the Cleveland Downtown Marriott at Key Center. His leadership permeates the entire property. To give you a hint of his essence, here’s how he perceives his leadership:

At this point in my career, the most significant role I can play is the development of others.

Refreshing! Words often read in a textbook, yet seldom experienced in action. It was like music to watch him interact with this staff and art to observe them respond to his wisdom.

A piece of insight he shared I’ll carry with me forever:

If you find yourself to be the smartest person in the room, you need to find another room.

I’ve learned to look around for the lessons surrounding us every day, to ask questions, and listen with the intent to sincerely understand. I thank Alex for demonstrating the real essence of leading and the importance of continuous learning. So, the question is: When people listen and observe us as we go about our daily activities, what lessons do they experience?

Seed tomorrow with wise intervention today!

Chris Clarke-Epstein is a woman I love, admire and respect – and has been a significant influence in my life. She’s the person who encouraged me to put pen to paper and share thoughts with others who may also search for ways to create their best life. Last week she shared a quote by David Allen, author of Getting Things Done, that caused me to pause:

There is no system, formula, software, or set of lists, no matter how completely filled out, that can tie together the almost infinite number of variables that go into getting our act together. The only thing that makes it work is consistent intervention of you.

Oooooh, the consistent intervention of you! Once again, Chris, you’ve challenged me with a lesson that takes an entire lifetime to execute. And, if taken seriously, would result in transformation. Now, the question is: Do I have the courage and tenacity to continue the process? Do you?
