Wednesday Wisdom

Seed tomorrow with wise humility today!

Being self-absorbed is terribly unattractive. Literally! It repels rather than attracts people.

Listening to someone carry on a monologue with me (unlike a dialogue where two people actually exchange thoughts and opinions) and not able to find a natural break in his rambling, I couldn’t help but think about a powerful piece of advice a mentor shared with me years ago:

Humility isn’t thinking less of yourself, it’s thinking of yourself less.

There’s enormous treasure in genuinely caring about others and demonstrating it through our actions. Today’s as good a day as any to practice the behaviors!

Life is calling . . . Today’s the day!

Seed tomorrow with wise stepping today!

Feeling a bit overwhelmed and less than competent while preparing for an upcoming project, I kept getting stuck in the enormity of what I had to accomplish before getting on the road. Then, thankfully, I ran across this message:

The difference between taking baby steps and acting small is that one prepares you for success, the other for a fall.

Gratitude to the anonymous author of that statement! It’s caused me to shift my thinking, stop beating myself up, and pace myself by taking small bites out of the something huge. Constructive reframing is productive, isn’t it?

Seed tomorrow with wise living today!

Driving from Quincy to Peabody Massachusetts (well, actually, sitting in a parking lot called the expressway) I read this on the bumper of a vehicle in front of me:

My father didn’t tell me how to live; he lived, and let me watch him do it.

I immediately thought of how blessed our children are to have my husband, Curt, as an example of living a purposeful life. I hope there are millions of mothers and children who know the same to be true as they say “Happy Fathers Day” this weekend.

Seed tomorrow with wise dining today!

In Boston again, enjoying the teams I’m working with, the walks along the river, and the dinners with my brothers.

Driving to the hotel last night I read an interesting sign:

The most significant changes in America begin at the dinner table.

Ooooh, let’s up! Dinner isn’t just for feeding the tummies. Minds, souls and futures are all nurtured at the dinner table. I know we’re all busy; however, finding time to break bread together as a family yields compounding returns on your investment. Look around at our nation . . . couldn’t we use some good dinner conversation!?!

Seed tomorrow with wise stumbling today!

Memorial Day . . . ah, the official beginning of summer!

Once again, we attended the local magnificent Memorial Day parade. My father, a World War II veteran is honored to participate every year, so it brings us additional pleasure. And, the last few years, our nephew, Trevor, has also entertained the crowd with his wonderful tuba in the marching band.

I was enjoying the music, the colors, the textures, and the excitement of the little children as they marveled at the sites passing before them. Then, the vehicles with veterans passed, followed by men and women in uniform who walked the miles of procession in the scorching sun. The cheers accelerated, the handmade “thank you” signs were held high and several saluted as they marched past us.

As we all took in the experience of thanking the courageous who have served, a man behind me said to his friend:

It’s interesting that people stumble over pebbles, never over mountain . . .these men and women challenged themselves in ways I’ll never understand.

What an interesting statement to make at that moment. And, it’s echoed in my head ever since he said it. So, I’ll think about what causes me to stagger, falter or hesitate. And, I’ll increase my awareness of not allowing it to be small and unworthy of the attention. How about you?
