Wednesday Wisdom

Seed tomorrow with wise decisions today!

Like many of you, I sent energy and prayers to the East Coast last week. Our daughter and son-in-law experienced a mandatory evacuation from their home in New York City and drove to the Catskills. So, I watched the news more than usual to stay tuned into what was happening in both areas.

Several times I viewed mayors pleading with people to make wise choices while watching video in the background of half naked people dancing in streets while struggling through gusting winds, playing in the ocean being pummeled by high waves, and attempting to drive through rushing waters where roads no longer existed. I wondered what in the world these people were thinking . . . or if they were thinking at all!

Then, I heard these words from a mayor:

Please, do not make decisions or use behaviors that put our rescue workers at risk.

Those words caught my breath. We all enjoy or suffer the consequences of the behaviors we use based on the decisions we make. And, the people we love are the residual receivers of the results as well. Am I always aware of how my decisions will affect others? Are you?

So, today I will increase my attention and my responsibility about choices and behaviors. How about you?

Life is calling . . . Today’s the day!

Wednesday Wisdom

Seed tomorrow with wisdom of the ages today!

G’day! Here I am, working in Australia again. On my first trip here I treated myself to an Aboriginal pilgrimage in the desert for my 44th birthday. That adventure became one of the defining experiences of my life. I was reminded of the significance of learning from ancient wisdom. An elder shared this message I still carry with me today:

We are all visitors to this time, this place. We are just passing through. Our purpose here is to observe, to learn, to grow, to love … and then we return home.

And now, approaching my 60s, I’m blessed to have moments again with elders who have come before me. And, I will leave with this wisdom:

Traveler, there are no paths. Paths are made by walking.

May we all keep moving forward with intention, carving a path that is worthy of the travel.

Life is calling . . . Today’s the day!

Seed tomorrow with wise todays today!

I’m packing to work outside the US for a while and ran across this note I wrote to myself and threw in my suitcase a while back while on the road:

The poor, the unsuccessful, the unhappy and the unhealthy are the ones who use the word tomorrow the most. ~Robert Kiyosaki

I’ll take that as a reminder to be present today and make the most of the moments I have in it.

Seed tomorrow with wise being today!

Our cherished Courtney married the love of her life last Saturday in our back yard. It’s the wedding family members declared as “the best wedding I’ve ever been to!”

Interesting, since it rained all day. The weather was so hot and humid people certainly could have complained about it being unbearable. Plans for where the string quartet would be able to sit and play, where the champagne reception could occur, where the DJ would park himself for the night, where dinner could be served, and even where the ceremony could be held all changed at the last minute because of the weather. Yes, there was disappointment with the continuous detours from the bride and groom’s vision of their desired day; however, there was even more love and resiliency extended to handle the challenges.

As I experience both families enjoy the delight of the moments, unimpeded by the external forces of the day, my respect and admiration for my sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and Scott’s family soared. Our daughter and her new husband amazed me as they set the example of uncommon grace and acceptance, embracing the day and all it had to offer with open arms.

Things change when we decide that joy is not external. Things change when we take uncommon responsibility for our life and our experience with it. Things change when we create who we are on purpose.

I know my mom looked down with a smile as I heard the echo of words she spoke to me as a child:

A worthy marriage doesn’t come by finding the right mate, but by being the right mate.

May I remember to take that kind of rare responsibility for who I am and how I behave, no matter what.

Seed tomorrow with wise commitments today!

Our first born, Courtney, will marry the love of her life this Saturday. Blink . . . and they’re all grown up!

This wonderfully sacred upcoming event reminds me of looking into the eyes of my cherished Curt 37 years ago, with faith and hope that the future would be glorious. Truth be told, our commitment – our promise to each other and to something more significant than ourselves, and our two beautiful daughters turned that hope into reality.

A piece of wisdom I share with Courtney and Scott comes from Scott Stanley:

Commitment is making the choice to give up all other choices.

To grow old together requires the promise from BOTH parties as they hold hands and cross joyful and challenging streets together.

May the commitment they make to their union help them each give birth to a part of themselves they haven’t known yet. And, may the journey always be illuminated with respect, admiration and cherish.
