Seed tomorrow with wise living today!
Today, our little girl turns 34 years old. And, in a few days her little sister will be 31 . . . how did that happen so fast??!!
This morning, as sit and remember my pregnancy, the ride to the hospital, the miracle moment of birth, and the incredible journey of parenting that followed, I realize something interesting: Every year, on both of our daughter’s birthdays, I spend more time in reflection than I do on my own birthday.
I remember glorious moments and ones that challenged me to my core. I remember great advice incisive parents shared along the way and attempt to forget the words and actions delivered by those with less insight (usually through unsolicited advice).
I can’t remember the words verbatim, so I’ll paraphrase. And, more importantly, I wish I could remember the names of those who spoke them, so I could give them credit. However, if you’re reading this and shared the wisdom with me decades ago, THANK YOU:
In this process called parenting, it won’t be only your children who grow. As much as we watch to see what our children do with their lives, they watch to see what we do with ours. Rather than telling your children how to live a life worth living, live one yourself.
I wish I could tell you that I remembered to live those words CONSISTENTLY.
If you read this regularly, you know my voracious desire for learning, especially through wonderful exploration and adventures that help expand who I am. I’m certain that was fueled by another astute woman who shared her thoughts on parenting with me a long time ago:
To bring up a child in the way you think s/he should go, you need to travel that way yourself once in a while.
Parenting has been the single most defining process of my life. Nothing more intently calls us to sacrifice who we are for who we could become . . . not an easy task. However, what we give in the process is miniscule compared to what we receive. I thank our two beautiful angels as most treasured teachers.
Life is calling . . . Today’s the day!
