Wednesday Wisdom

Seed tomorrow with wise behaving today!

While we were roaming Beale Street a few weeks ago, my husband spotted this, immediately took a picture and shared it with me:

Women who behave rarely make history.

I instantly felt the inner knowing of that statement. Truth reaches deep, doesn’t it? The statement doesn’t suggest that we recklessly misbehave. Rather, it proposes that we serve ourselves and the Universe when we think before politely and obediently standing in line to simply follow what’s before us.

Today, how about more deliberate thought, intentional behavior and less tagging along?

Seed tomorrow with wise hope today!

Sipping water after exercising in a small town in Thailand a few weeks ago, I read this on the side of a paper cup from the water dispenser:

The only hope happens to the person who is hoping.

I’m embarrassed to say that, at the moment, my only memory of hope was that the exercise would finally start to work and I’d drop the weight! Although, as I pondered more seriously, I remembered times in my life when I hoped and prayed to “lift a weight” and live a lighter life.

I’ve come to understand that hope in the future gives power to the present. So, no matter what you’re experiencing today, may hope help you carry the weight and lead you to the tomorrows you desire.

Seed tomorrow with wise living today!

Today, our little girl turns 34 years old. And, in a few days her little sister will be 31 . . . how did that happen so fast??!!

This morning, as sit and remember my pregnancy, the ride to the hospital, the miracle moment of birth, and the incredible journey of parenting that followed, I realize something interesting: Every year, on both of our daughter’s birthdays, I spend more time in reflection than I do on my own birthday.

I remember glorious moments and ones that challenged me to my core. I remember great advice incisive parents shared along the way and attempt to forget the words and actions delivered by those with less insight (usually through unsolicited advice).

I can’t remember the words verbatim, so I’ll paraphrase. And, more importantly, I wish I could remember the names of those who spoke them, so I could give them credit. However, if you’re reading this and shared the wisdom with me decades ago, THANK YOU:

In this process called parenting, it won’t be only your children who grow. As much as we watch to see what our children do with their lives, they watch to see what we do with ours. Rather than telling your children how to live a life worth living, live one yourself.

I wish I could tell you that I remembered to live those words CONSISTENTLY.

If you read this regularly, you know my voracious desire for learning, especially through wonderful exploration and adventures that help expand who I am. I’m certain that was fueled by another astute woman who shared her thoughts on parenting with me a long time ago:

To bring up a child in the way you think s/he should go, you need to travel that way yourself once in a while.

Parenting has been the single most defining process of my life. Nothing more intently calls us to sacrifice who we are for who we could become . . . not an easy task. However, what we give in the process is miniscule compared to what we receive. I thank our two beautiful angels as most treasured teachers.

Wednesday Wisdom

Seed tomorrow with wise thoughts, deeds and words today!

As a relaxed and reflected on a Memphis rooftop restaurant, reviewing my “notes to self” from my last adventure in Australia, this note struck me as one to remember often:

The game of life is the game of boomerangs. Our thoughts, deeds and words return to us sooner or later, with astounding accuracy. ~ Florence Shinn, writer, 1871-1940

I’m old enough now to review my life to this moment and see the profound wisdom in those words. So, today I’ll increase my attention as I think, act and speak my way through the day . . . how about you?
