Seed tomorrow with wise ACTION today!

An influential woman in my life was interviewed for the latest D C Everest High School Oral History Project. The resulting book, Wisconsin Women: Celebrating their Contributions, is being released today! There will be a reception tonight at the city’s Grand Theater with a program featuring Chief Justice Shirley Abrahamson and Justice Anne Walsh Bradley. Those honorable justices are in good company with Chris Clarke-Epstein!

I’m so disappointed that I’m in Washington DC and can’t experience the festivities with her tonight. Along with being a cherished friend, by simply observing and listening, Chris has been a treasured role model and mentor for decades now. Here’s one of the MANY straight forward, productive life lessons I learned from her:

Reading, thinking or talking about doing a thing IS NOT DOING the thing.

Nothing happens without action; action really does speak louder than words.

When all is said and done, more is said than done.

Chris, on the other hand is one of those rare individuals who steps up to the plate and DOES, making life happen, not only for herself, but for her family, friends and the community around her. Thank you, Chris, for your consistent contributions.

Seed tomorrow with wise ACTION today!

I’m back in the San Francisco Bay area, working with great people, savoring exceptional food and breathing in breathtaking sites. In the middle of struggling with a section of the program I was designing, I received this email message:

The world does not pay for what a person knows. But it pays for what a person does with what s/he knows. ~ Laurence Lee

Yep, that’s been my experience. The “ask and you will receive” message reminded me to move forward. Action conquers fear, it relieves the blocks of procrastination, and moves us one step closer to the result we desire. Let’s make today an action day!

Seed tomorrow with wise thinking today!

Few have or ever will change the world as Steve Jobs did. Last week thoughts and prayer were extended to the family and friends of one who left a significant legacy. As I reviewed a speech he gave about death, his thinking caused a shift in mine:

No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.
Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

Imagine that . . . walking in the shadow of death and referring to is as: very likely the single best invention of Life.

Almost everything – all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure – these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.

Thank you Steve Jobs, for the abundant ways in which you offered us tools to redefine, reshape and re-sculpt our lives.

Seed tomorrow with wise continual growth today!

I’m working with a few Ford product value & material cost performance teams in Dearborn Michigan today. As I enter a room I read a daily quotation posted last night:

Without continual growth and progress words like improvement, achievement and success have no meaning. ~ Ben Franklin

Are you like many who get serious about your growth and development now and then? Benjamin understood the operative notion about progress: continual. What are you deliberately improving about yourself right now? How different would the world be if individuals were deliberately, intentionally, and continuously improving themselves? How different would organizations be if continuous improvement was a serious mission by the majority of its members?

Today’s as good a day as any to pick one thing to improve, develop an action plan to achieve progress, and move toward change for the better day-by-day. Execute the plan and amaze yourself within 30 days. Once you’ve on the route to mastery with that attribute, you can move onto another. Right now, let’s just get started!

The most effective way to do it is to do it. ~ Amelia Earhart
