Seed tomorrow with wise discomfort today!

My husband, Curt, turned 61 yesterday. My goodness, the years fly. We met when we were 13 years old. And, as I reflect back upon the decades that followed I continue to be astonished at the changes we’ve made, the people we’ve become and the tribe we’ve created together. By simply observing him I’ve learned the behaviors of compassion, patience, calm and resourcefulness in the middle of chaos and crisis, unconditional love . . . and the list goes on.

A menagerie of memories surface as I attempt to identify the root causes of our personal and partnered evolution. And, in some ways they can be summed up in this statement that profoundly moved both of us the first time we read it:

What is most important, in any moment, is to sacrifice who we are for who we could become.

When is it important to be comfortable being uncomfortable? To get from where we are to where we want to be requires awkward, difficult, frightening and even painful phases. Intention change is not for the frail. However, for each of our lives, happily ever after never comes without turning the page.

Happy Birthday, Curt. May you continue to gladly and courageously embrace the uncomfortable feelings required to move to your and our next chapters!

Life is calling . . . Today’s the day . . . Make this moment matter!!

Seed tomorrow with wise mistake-making today!

Have you ever resisted taking action for fear of not succeeding? Has the chance of failing kept you from taking the next necessary step? Does the thought of making a mistake keep you stuck right where you are?

When snow skiing in my teens and early twenties I used to “pride” myself on never falling. That was until my husband (then boyfriend) reminded me that I’d never master the activity if I didn’t force myself to experiment and explore, which required more confrontation with the snow than I was willing to experience (I embarrassingly hate when he’s so right!)

I recently remembered that experience in a moment of apprehension that was followed by immediate hesitation. To move through it, I found myself revisiting this statement from Albert Einstein:

Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.

Oh, how Einstein and Curt have helped me stretch and grow! So, for a moment, think about this:
Who are the wise sages who challenge and encourage you?
Even if you’re unaware of it, are there people who depend on you to inspire, challenge and encourage them?

Fear, anxiety and apprehension are all part of living a full life. Wise thoughts tucked in the corners of our minds can work as their antidote.

Seed tomorrow with wise evidence gathering today!

Last Saturday I attended a seminar with a treasured friend who is also an exceptional coach, consultant, educator and outstanding professional speaker. The day was fertile with rich conversation and entrenched with meaningful “take-aways.”

In response to the notion “I’m not enough” (which comes in a variety of forms!), Mary Jane gave this suggestion:

Start collecting evidence that tells you that YOU ARE good enough rather than gathering evidence that validates your opinion (your insecurities) that you are NOT!!!!

What a productive way to get on the other side of our self-doubts! Today, let’s begin to pay attention to, gather and journal past & current facts that we ARE enough! The proof to substantiate our worth is all around us – if we look for it! Unfortunately, too many of us focus on and accumulate examples of our human flaws and shortfalls. And, what human doesn’t possess those?!

Seed tomorrow with wise challenge-addressing today!

I’m back in Dallas working with several Marriott properties and the Dallas Ritz Carlton.  I must say – I love luxury!

Yesterday, I received an email and had a conversation with a Director of Rooms about the same topic – challenges. Both the message and the conversation contained this notion:

It’s funny how some people think that avoiding challenges will bring them peace. It’s as if the peace they now know didn’t come from earlier challenges that were faced and addressed.

Things change when we change the way we look at things.  Often, opportunities meet us disguised as challenges or difficulties. Addressing them welcomes us to stretch, grow and eventually even expand a bit of our internal peace. So, let’s stop avoiding the tough stuff and embrace the difficult with anticipation of our own internal evolution.
