Wednesday Wisdom

Seed tomorrow with wise bravery today!

Yesterday, from the airport to my hotel in Surabaya, Indonesia I noticed 2 similar statues. Both had a large fish and a crocodile that seemed to form a circle. So, as I met my client, the meaning of the statue was one of my first inquiries.

Indra responded that there are several stories about how the city got its name and one of the most popular is the legend of a shark (sura) and a crocodile (baya) fighting each other to see who was the strongest and most powerful animal in the country. Before leaving the States, I did my research and knew the city was called “The City of Heroes.” Indra’s explanation helped me understand why:

After all, no matter what country we call home, wouldn’t you agree that anyone who rises above mediocrity to achieve something has to bravely face danger?

Yes, as a matter of fact, I do agree.

Wednesday Wisdom

Seed tomorrow with wise unconditional love today!

Have you ever been so happy you couldn’t slap the smile off your face? I’ve felt that way since the moment Curt and I opened a beautifully wrapped package from our daughter, Courtney and our son in law, Scott to find sweet little outfits with embroidered messages of “I love grandma and grandpa.” Our first grand baby in January!!! Through immediate tears the Old Welsh proverb echoed:

Perfect love sometimes does not come until the first grandchild.

Perhaps it’s a yearning to make up for my human flaws while raising our two beautiful daughters, or a desire to create the same joy, laughter, noise and chaos we miss so much now that they’re all grown up. Or, decades of attentively listening to friends rave about the bliss of grand parenthood, the urge to bite the chubby cherub cheeks of a little one, to hear the guttural giggles that can only be generated by their complete surrender to joy, or to observe the wide eyes of learning that’s often a constant in youth. Whatever it is, I’m SO READY to experience it all!!

And, I’ll bet every grandparent reading this is nodding their head with a grin of knowing!

Seed tomorrow with wise healing today!

Off the Denver, so I’m getting everything done before I leave. As I took a break and read through my Facebook page, my eyes landed on a picture of an obviously damaged pottery bowl with a mended crack that glistened, so I went on to read the caption below:

When the Japanese mend broken objects they aggrandize the damage by filling the cracks with gold. They believe that when something’s suffered damage and has a history it becomes more beautiful.

I was even more intrigued when I looked up the word “aggrandize” to find it meant to exaggerate, elaborate, overdo, enhance or enlarge. The pain between broken moments and mending can feel relentless. However, a reframe of those experiences as our chronicles – our memoirs that provide what we need to develop strength and exquisite inner beauty makes it worth it. Let’s remember to mend well. Let’s exaggerate restorations with mental gold.

Seed tomorrow with wise support of freedom today!

Here we are – the Fourth of July!!! Doesn’t this day seem different as an adult than when we were kids? With sincere heartfelt gratitude for all those who have made our liberty possible, I reflect upon the freedom we have, the freedoms we’ve surrendered with little to no fight, and the freedom I pray we hold on to. You know the old adage, freedom isn’t free.

While writing Common Sense Thomas Paine also penned several lines of encouragement to the American revolutionaries, such as:

Those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom must undergo the fatigue of supporting it.

This fourth day of July I hope we all celebrate the freedom we enjoy and implore we don’t take it for granted or allow much of it to slip through our fingers.

Life is calling . . . Today’s the day . . . Make this moment matter!!
