Wednesday Wisdom

Seed tomorrow with sincere gratitude today!

Cards, Facebook messages, emails and face-to-face Happy Thanksgivings were plentiful last week. And, in the end, most agreed that we have so much to be grateful for. A Thanksgiving blessings that I remember with joy:

Gratitude . . . It turns what we have into enough.

May we remember to pause and give thanks everyday, and to be grateful for that which really matters in life. As contained in my friend Scott Friedman’s message, It’s not happiness that makes us grateful, it’s gratefulness that makes us happy.

Life is calling . . . Today’s the day . . . Make this moment matter!!

Seed tomorrow with sincere giving today!

On CNN a few days ago, I saw Pierce Morgan interview chef and Food Channel adventurer, Anthony Bourdain. They spoke of explorations around the world, indulging in masterpieces of some of the finest culinary artisans on the planet. Near the end of the interview, Morgan asked Bourdain what makes an exceptional chef. Bourdain responded with the notion of loving one’s work and an insistence on cutting edge innovation and consistent excellence. Then, he added:

And, the sincere joy in giving pleasure to others.

A huge hug to all those who will create sheer bliss tomorrow as they serve their Thanksgiving feast to others (some who are already prepping for the feast as I write!), THANK YOU! Many will be grateful for your banquet of joy, made with love.

Wednesday Wisdom

Seed tomorrow with wise, kind words today!

I’m working at a Ford assembly plant this week in Hermosilla, Mexico. A beautiful entrance, donned with lavish vegetation including draped vines and a waterfall. The plant is full of hard working people who are kind, generous and patient with my lack of speaking sadly little Spanish. Yesterday, when I was struggling to find a way to thank someone for a gracious deed, he held my hands and said:

To someone with good understanding, only a few words are necessary.

Ah, how I thank the world for providing wonderfully kind and cordial people who bless me to be in their presence!

Seed tomorrow with wise learning today!

I was raised Byzantine Catholic, so being in Istanbul is like drinking from a familiar fountain.  Throughout the day we hear the minor chords in the chants of the call to prayer. Each mantra stirs my soul and gives me “center.”  The food satiates more than my tummy and the wonders of the architecture make me bow.

Yesterday, before wandering the markets, my dear friend, Leslie Charles and I adventured out to explore the awe of the mosques.  We decided to hire a guide at the breathtaking Haghia Sophia (Church of Divine Wisdom in English), a Byzantine church turned into an Ottoman mosque, and now a museum.  It was a wonderful way to learn from an old site that was built on Byzantium’s acropolis.

Proud of his history, our guide questioned whether we had the masters or the technology today to build marble structures like this that would last for centuries. With that in mind, taking in the splendor as I roamed the sacredness of the vaulted chambers, I thought of a Turkish proverb I read on the plane flight here:

Study from new books, but learn from old teachers.

Thank you, Istanbul.  Thank you for re-surfacing sacred memories of my soul, for centering me in the holy and for blessing me as such a gracious teacher.

Life is calling . . .  Today’s the day . . . Make this moment matter!!
