Seed tomorrow with wise experiences today!

Processing all I experienced in Cuba will take a while. The art forms were amazing and the people even more fascinating. One afternoon, we had the pleasure of meeting Laura Alonso, the daughter of the renowned Havana born dancer, Alicia Alonso, Cuban “prima ballerina assoluta and choreographer.” Laura thanked us for visiting her dance studio and said, What is art without an audience? Although many of us dream about being the artist, we hopefully play our part as exceptional audience members for those who produce magnificence.

And, were blessed to observe her and her father, Fernando, direct a rehearsal for an upcoming show. My 93 year old father met her 98 year old father who is still sitting though rehearsals, giving advice and making corrections! As Laura stated, He should be here. Home is boring!

Perhaps that’s good advice for all of us! First, let’s make home less boring. One way to do that is to get out and experience the world more often and more deeply. We don’t have to go far to do that. Visit a museum, listen to music with an attentive ear, eat at an ethnic restaurant you haven’t experienced before, make an ethnic dish you haven’t made before, move your body to music from another culture and feel it’s beat and rhythm . . . the list goes on and on. The world is full of interesting, exciting experiences. Boredom is simply a choice.

Seed tomorrow with wise adventures today!

For decades, my brothers took my parents on great travels around the world. However, the last few year of mom’s life made those trips impossible. In the planning phase of the first international trip without mom, they asked my 93 year old dad where he wanted to go. He immediately responded that he’s always wanted to experience Cuba . . . and there’s no way I was going to miss that! So, tomorrow we leave to begin a fabulous adventure! And, I know mom will be looking down with a smile as she watches us explore the sounds, sights, tastes, sensations and people of this interesting culture.

As Helen Keller expressed, Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. One of my favorite scholars, Joseph Campbell agrees:

The big question is whether you are going to be able to say a hearty yes to your adventure.

The cultural organizers of the trip (the only way an American can travel to Cuba) made it clear that internet access in the country will be less than reliable, if accessible at all. So, I’ll probably miss communicating with you next week. In my absence, let me encourage you to embrace and enjoy each and every adventure that comes your way!

Seed tomorrow with wise listening today!

This year, would you like to work on a skill that would significantly change your life, perhaps the lives of those you love, as well as strangers you haven’t even met yet? If yes, let’s try listening. WHAT? Did you say something? I’m sorry. I was too busy thinking about something more important than what you were saying (or, what I was reading!)

Wisdom is the reward you get for a lifetime of listening when you’d have preferred to talk. ~ Doug Larson

Our minds typically race with our own thoughts as others speak. So, we filter out, distort, or don’t hear at all! We all have the capacity to listen, it’s the desire to listen we need to change. Hard work, yet worth the investment!
