Seed tomorrow with wise courage today!

At the beginning of this week, I met a remarkable young woman on a plane from Detroit to Florida.  She recently donated bone marrow to someone she didn’t know.  When she humbly completed the details of the story I responded by commending her generosity and added that it must have taken a considerable amount of courage to behave in such a manner.  She responded:

My mom raised me with the notion that courage is not the absence of fear, rather a decision that something else is more important than that fear. And, giving another person a chance to live a bit longer is certainly more important than any fear I was feeling.

Anne Marie – at a remarkably young age, you’ve chosen to be a remarkable young woman, making a remarkable difference.  Meeting you was remarkably inspiring for me.

Seed tomorrow with wise encouragement today!

Leslie Charles is editing the leadership book Mary Jane Mapes and I are in the middle of writing.  And, yesterday was a book work day for the three of us.  As always, our conversation traveled to our dreams, our futures and immediate barriers to action toward success. Each of us declared to the others, If only you could see yourself as we see you!  We agreed that our greatest obstacle is:

We stand in our own way!

Our inner dialogue, programming from the past, self-defeating notions of what we can and can’t accomplish all spit in the face of our dreams. To paraphrase Ann Hathaway’s acceptance speech at receiving her recent Oscar: This award is a blunt object I will use to bludgeon my self-doubt when it reels its ugly head.

I am completely aware of the blessings I have in Leslie and Mary Jane as colleagues, comrades and dear friends.  My desire for you is to have people in your life who are willing to have deep, difficult conversations, give you feedback that enables you to grow and move on, and encourage you to take the risks required to achieve.

Seed tomorrow with wise variety today!

Last week I worked for a hotel in Memphis.  Trolley cars, Soul Food and jazz filled my spirit.  This week I’m at an automotive plant in Hermosillo, Mexico.  Assembly lines, luscious Latin cuisine and music continue the process of filling the Soul!  As is said, variety is the spice of life!

Or, as Aphran Behn puts it:  Variety is the soul of pleasure.

And, as the Chinese proverb states:   Sour, sweet, bitter, pungent, all must be tasted.

Here’s to seeking out and enjoying all the magnificent multiplicity life has to offer!

Seed tomorrow with music making today!

Preparing for the next phase of a book Mary Jane Mapes and have been working on for years now, I’m in the midst of “cleaning up” interviews with women who have achieved uncommon success in their life of leadership. Between attempting to do the fifth edit to honor these exceptional women and put words of wisdom onto paper for an inspiring and respectful introduction, I’m making myself crazy.

In the middle of one of those mad moments, I take a break, have a cup of coffee and breathe. And, of course, I read. Appropriately enough, as I open the first page, I land on these words:

Remember the music is not in the piano. ~ Clement Mok

Thank you, Clement. And, thank you all the women we’ve interviewed. In retrospect, these leaders stayed true to themselves and their values, made tough choices, served others and led teams to achieve, even when it was treacherous. They listened to themselves and orchestrated results. Now, it’s time for me to share their melody with the best harmony I can. So, get back to work.
