Seed tomorrow with wise family appreciation today!

Wow, the end of a series of family events!  Each one revealed a number of intriguing lessons!  Every one of us is fantastic and flawed. In some cases, our quirks and idiosyncrasies scream louder than in others; however, we ALL have them!  So, as a family, we come together as delightful and dysfunctional, sometimes in the same moment.  At each event, I made sure to invest a few moments to breathe in the tribe that stood in front of me.  For, as Joseph Campbell wrote, and I genuinely feel, They are the we in me.  We may not be perfect or exceptionally skilled at nurturing each other; however, as I read recently:

Families are the compass that guides us, the inspiration to reach greater heights, and our comfort when we falter.    (Or, at least family can be, if we make it so).

Mother Teresa was asked what each of us could do to promote world peace.  Her response: Go home and love your familyToday’s a good day for each of us to do just that! (Yes, even the difficult ones . . . for, they typically need love the most)

Life is calling . . .  Today’s the day . . . Make this moment matter!!

Seed tomorrow with root hacking today!

This summer’s been incredibly crammed with family events.  On the flight home from a fabulous gathering in Oregon I replayed the video of my behavior over the season and was amazed and disappointed in the speed and ease with which I surface judgment over compassion. Then, as I unpacked from the trip I found this old, crumpled up note I wrote to myself years ago:

For every thousand hacking at the leaves of evil, there is only one striking at the root.

I’m completely aware that individually and collectively, the only way we’ll achieve quantum improvements in our existence is to quit hacking at the leaves of the superficial Self and get to work on the cause. There, of course, is where the shifts of our attitudes and behaviors flow.  I’ve been working on this for decades, yet, I repeatedly catch myself in the shallow. Holding the mirror to my behaviors reminds me of how much work I still have to do – so, here’s a prayer I’ll be reciting regularly:

May I have eyes to see the best in myself and in others, a heart that will forgive the worst in others, a mind that will help others forget the bad things that have happened, and a Soul that will never lose faith and help others do the same.

Inner work continues . . .

Seed tomorrow with wise inner knowledge today!

Is Monday a day you often promise yourself to get more disciplined about something? This Monday I made the wise choice of returning to DAILY meditation, eliminating all the excuses I too often accept. With serene serendipity, a few minutes after I made that decision, I read an email from a client, with this statement written after her signature:

Be careful not to live an entire lifetime and know more about other people than you know about yourself.

Hum . . . sitting with silence is in order today . . . and EVERY day!  What do you do to learn more about yourself?

Life is calling . . .  Today’s the day . . . Make this moment matter!!

Seed tomorrow with wise anyways today!

Before responding to a frustrating email that evoked judgment and distain rather than understanding and compassion, I fumbled through my office for some inspiration. Thankfully, I ran across this, by Mother Teresa:

People are often unreasonable. Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of ulterior motives. Be kind anyway.

If you are honest, people may cheat you. Be honest anyway.

If you find happiness, people may be jealous. Be happy anyway.

The good you do today may be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway.

Give the world the best you have and it may never be enough. Give your best anyway.

For you see, in the end, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway.

Most of us will not evolve to the level of a Mother Teresa before we cross over; however, whatever step forward we make, makes a difference . . . so, let’s step anyway!

Seed tomorrow with wise choices today!

Our Little One was married last Saturday, with the ceremony and reception at our home.  It was a sacred weekend that overflowed with support, celebration and incredible love from last Thursday through last night.  People traveled from Hawaii to Massachusetts, and at least a dozen states in between.  To ensure the festivities would be fabulous, many of them arrived early and immediately jumped in to work the moment they entered the choreographed chaos. Rain, flight delays nor jetlag hindered the preparation or the celebration.  Of the many comments I overheard, this one really made me smile:

Happily ever after is not a fairy tale. It’s a choice.

Many of us who’ve been in long term relationships could benefit from acting on that comment!  Congratulations Amanda and Blake.  May you always choose to respect, admire and love each other as you do in this moment. And, in the difficult times, may you always choose to be a soft and safe place for the other to fall.
