Seed tomorrow with wise walking today!

Here I am, my second week in Australia; packing in preparation to leave and treasure this land once again as a fond memory. I’m always intrigued that the seasons are opposite of those in the States, so as the U.S. approaches autumn, I’m experiencing spring here. And, with the time change, I love writing my family about how nice the day after theirs is here (which makes getting this message out on Wednesday challenging!)

On the ride to the last airport, I had a conversation with the driver about life’s best adventures.  He shared an Aboriginal saying his mom spoke to him as a child:

Traveler, there are no paths. Paths are made by walking.

Of course, we learn from others; however, in the end, there’s something invigorating and essential about carving out a course and traversing a trail because it calls us.  I’ve come to understand that this requires silence, then action.  So, we walk on!

Seed tomorrow with wise struggling today!

Sunday night in Sydney, Australia I was feeling the effects of the long flight.  So, I crawled into bed and turned on the TV to lull myself to sleep.  As if it was background music, I heard an interview with singer, Keith Urban.  What a delightful man!  He talked about the glorious experience of being a dad and how fame shrinks in comparison. When asked when he knew he had “arrived” his response awakened me:

I don’t know arriving; I know struggling.

So often we want the desired outcome, the result, reward of a process without living through the challenges, the struggles, the work – those necessities that create the consequences. May we not get bogged down by the struggle.  And, may we not become mesmerized by the illusion of arriving.

Life is calling . . .  Today’s the day . . . Make this moment matter!!

Seed tomorrow with wise local purchases today!

For many reasons, our family shops with our wonderful local merchants as often as we can.  This past weekend, roaming Washington Avenue in Hoboken, we saw a sign in a window that gave us even more reason to continue:

HE GOOD NEWS: A dollar spent at a locally owned store is usually spent 6-15 times before it leaves the community. From $1.00 you create $5 – $14 in value within that community.

THE BAD NEWS: Spend the same $1 at a national chain store and 80% of it leaves town immediately.

Nothing against big box stores . . . however, how about if we create a bit more good news for as many communities as we can!

Seed tomorrow with wise leadership today!

I’m back at Ford this week, digging deeper into increasing the value of and reducing the cost of vehicle excellence. Conversation after conversation, challenge after challenge, I hear the incredible impact Allen Mulally has made as a leader. He is the consummate example of:

Leadership is not about control, it’s about climate control.

In the decades of working in the auto industry and almost 25 years on the Ford Value Improvement team, I’ve experienced numerous attempts to yank the collective mindset out of the industrial age of following orders and complacency into innovation and resourcefulness with a sincere eye on the customer. Not inside this industry or in any other have I experienced the cultural shift Mulally has inspired at Ford.  If one is interested in influential leadership, I’d suggest reading about his philosophies, practices and processes. His intention can be felt throughout the organization.
