Seed tomorrow with wise reaching out today!

Too many flights and long layovers the last few weeks. To stay sane, I tell myself it’s the gift of reading time, meeting new people, and exploring anything and everything that might be a hidden treasure. Wonderfully, I ran across a magazine in the Saigon airport with an old article written by Ed McMahon about interviewing Mother Theresa.  Remember Ed??!

Before the interview, with genuine sincerity, he asked what he could do for her and her cause.  “Our program reaches several thousand of people, so we can give your cause great exposure.”  To which she responded, “No, thank you.  I don’t want exposure.”  Well, our reach can raise a considerable amount of money for your cause.”  To which she responded, “No, thank you.  I don’t want money.”

Confused and sincerely wanting to help, Ed asked what he could possibly do to help.

This 5 foot ten, 85 pound woman looked at me in the eyes and said:  Get up at 4:00 in the morning and walk the streets here in Phoenix. You’ll stumble upon someone who believes they’re all alone.  Convince them they’re not.

Ed felt her intense understanding of human loneliness and the need for connection.  Day-by-day, how many paths do we cross, where the stretch of a hand and the kindness of a heart would benefit someone more than we’ll ever know?

Seed tomorrow with action today!

Two days ago, on the drive from the airport to my hotel in Surabaya, Indonesia, I looked up and saw a huge billboard that read:

Talk less. Do more.

My visceral response caused me pain before hope.  As I’ve written before:  In the end, all too often, there’s more said than done.  Globally, we seem to get it.  Today, we can change it.  So, I ask myself where, when and how I take action about those things I believe are most important in life.

PS:  May I plead that we continue to rise and act above the nonsense of corporate, political and religious (not spiritual, religious dogma) that promote their self-interests?  Let’s continue to move toward action based on human honor, dignity, respect and integrity, rather than power, control, righteousness and oppression.

Seed tomorrow with wise courage today!

My curiosity often causes me to overhear others’ conversations.  During a long layover in the Tokyo airport on my way to Malaysia, I could help but hear a tense discussion between a mother and her son sitting near me.  Mom to son:

You can choose courage or you can choose comfort – you can’t have both.

After hearing those words, I of course, couldn’t help but initiate a conversation with an exceptional woman who I’ll now probably communicate across the world with for the rest of my life.

It’s amazing how life continually offers up lessons, wisdom, friendships and comfort – yes, the comfort of embracing new friends, shifted perspectives and remembering that courage will eventually increase comfort; however, typically, not in the middle of experiencing it!

Seed tomorrow with wise transcendence today!

I write in the midst of intense inspiration after watching an interview with Diana Nyad, the 64 year old who recently swam from Cuba to Florida.

After years of working as a sportscaster and not swimming a lap for over 3 decades, she turned 60, her mother passed, and she looked inward asking the question,

Am I living a life that I admire?

She said it wasn’t about swimming, it was about transcendence. Sexually abused by a coach in her youth, she swam for years fueled by anger. In her 53 hour swim between the two countries, challenged by no sleep, rough waters, vomiting, dehydration, the effects of salt water, deadly jelly fish and the demons of her own mind, the experience gave her a new mantra:

Find a way.

Working through a challenged relationship? Confused about what to do with an out-of-control child?  Challenged by something so deeply that you feel blinded to a way out?  Find a way!

When you achieve your goals in life, it’s not about what you get – it’s about who you become.

Time for some of us to expand our horizons??!

PS:  I’ll be working in Asia until the end of the month.  Please accept my apology and thank you for your patience if once again, the format is re-configured by a country’s filters.  To read the message sent from Australia it was necessary to scroll down through the garble.  However, I don’t know what the next filter might create!  Off to experience some adventures!

Seed tomorrow with wise leadership today!

Back from Australia, so fingers crossed that this message does not include the garble at the beginning, which I’m told is caused by their filters.

Now, with almost a week with no work, I’ve made my way to Manhattan to blissfully enjoy the entire time with our sweet little grandson, Reid. Yippee for me!  As often as Curt and I are blessed to be with him, we’re consistently amazed by his growth each and every time we arrive – physically, cognitively, psychically . . . human development is truly miraculous!  As Harvey Firestone wrote decades ago:

The growth and development of people is the highest calling of leadership.

That stated, a standing ovation to all those around the world who lead little ones to learning. As I experience Reid’s mommy & daddy and auntie & uncle joyfully embracing the organic learning moments that surface daily, I can’t help but think about how glorious our little planet could be if all children were given such a start.
