Wednesday Wisdom

Seed tomorrow with wise gratitude today!

As a nation, this month, we’ve remembered the loss of  President John F. Kennedy 50 years ago, and honored his life and his legacy.  He left behind a number of important messages, including one worth remembering as we celebrate our nation’s holiday this week.

As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.

Many of us will gather with family and friends to celebrate a day of Thanksgiving. May we put flesh on our words of appreciation and make them come alive with our action.

Wednesday Wisdom

Seed tomorrow with wise learning today

I swear, the commitment to continuous learning changes everything!  In a conversation with an extremely frustrated young man over a situation within which he felt trapped, I found myself responding:

It’s often difficult yet essential to distinguish between events that are really beyond our control and events we actually caused ourselves.

By his description, he contributed to the situation substantially more than he perceived.  It’s hard to see into our own fishbowls; however, others can easily observe our swimming patterns!

I smiled at how easily and effortlessly the response flowed from my lips. This was not a novel thought that was produced by my brain. Listening, reading, observing and absorbing every day for decades facilitates our maturing process.  There’s not a day that passes that doesn’t offer us lessons. People, books, articles, seminars, CDs, conversations and discernment all offer us opportunities to enhance and enrich our lives.

Let’s be vigilant with our attention and focus to support the unfolding of the lessons that eventually guide our lives.

Please accept my apologies for the garble that appeared at the beginning of this week’s Wednesday Wisdom.  I haven’t figured out why it happens now and then.  Here it is, sent from a different computer (hopefully without the garble!)

Seed tomorrow with wise fact facing today!

After fighting it for years, I finally had a total knee replacement Monday.  Fortunately, the magnificent surgeon, Dr. Ryan Molli, who did the procedure, is a dear friend of our son-in-law, so my anxiety was slightly reduced (slightly).

Years of denial, avoidance and resistance, the eventual embrace of fear and anxiety and the final surrender to the physical need for repair all offered lessons.  One I’m contemplating today as I struggle though discomfort:

To ignore the facts does not change the facts.

Sometimes we simply have to acknowledge that what is is. Then, deal with the reality of the facts that stand before us.

Wednesday Wisdom

Seed tomorrow with becoming more and needing less today!

Friends and family gathered for my dad’s 94th birthday this past weekend. My brothers came in from Boston and relatives traveled from Pennsylvania, where dad was born and spent his early days as a coal miner.

Upon entering the house, my “adopted” brother, Jerry immediately gave me two ideas to ponder for myself and to share with others.  The first one: Need less. The second: There is no finish line.

The family spent the night after the Saturday festivities. So, we enjoyed a big Sunday breakfast before everyone left and I retired to the couch. Soul Sunday with Oprah – yes!   I was blessed to catch her interview with singer/songwriter India Arie.  Jerry’s words echoed in my mind as I heard her say:

All of nature is resurrection . . . Life is a continuous process of becoming more of who we are . . .  Do more, be more, need less.  . . . Let everyday allows a new unfolding of Self.

And, it all comes together.  I find intrigue in the life’s lessons, especially the ones that come with clarity and are delivered with repetition.
