Seed tomorrow with wise peace-making today!

Today, many of us will gather with friends and family to celebrate the birth of the Christ child. Fabulous food, unwrapping of thoughtful gifts, Christmas carols, eggnog and reflections of a year rapidly coming to an end may fill our day. May we also transcend the Earthly substances to embrace the spiritual essence of not only the day, but of the season.

Peace on Earth and goodwill toward all.

And, today may offer lots of opportunity to practice the notion of peace and goodwill. The kindness, patience and compassion of listening to an annoying family member; letting go of past hurts and forgiving those who caused the pain; biting your tongue rather than using it in a great “come back,” gracefully walking away from any negative comments or refusing to participate in critical conversation – all ways to create a bit of peace on Earth and goodwill in the moment.

Tough, I know; however necessary if our piece of the global puzzle is to contribute and not contaminate.

Let there be peace on Earth and let it begin with me.

Seed tomorrow with wise self respect today!

I recently experienced a lovely young woman accepting rude, loud, public disrespect by a man who claimed to love her. A few minutes later she approached me. First, making excuses for him, then expressing her devoted love, and, in the end, asked me for advice. I heard words posted on Facebook by my dear friend, Mags Bell, flowing from my lips:

Remember, the way you treat yourself sets the standard for others.

Let’s remember that we teach people how to treat us. At some point in our lives, it’s important to figure out why we let others mistreat us; however, in the meantime, let’s at least place value on ourselves as miraculous human being and accept our worth.

When we learn to hold ourselves in high esteem, with dignity, others tend to follow our lead. As we begin to leave 2013 behind and walk toward a New Year, let’s honor ourselves as we’d like to be honored by others. It’s a start.

Wednesday WIsdom

Seed tomorrow with wise work today!

Have you ever been frustrated by not accomplishing something you truly wanted to?  Me too.  Then, on one of my long walks, I ran into this message:

Don’t be upset by the results you didn’t get with the work you didn’t do.

Ouch. Cause-and-effect actually applies to the real world!  We DO reap what we sow.  In reality, we live with the consequences created by our own behaviors, often, in collusion or harmony with those we love or loathe.

Although it’s hard to believe that we’re rounding out 2013 and turning the corner on 2014, the New Year will be here soon, very soon!  So, this is a great time to plan for the next 12 months, recalibrate our sense of responsibility and solidify the required actions to create the life we desire.

Seed tomorrow with wise music making today!

Following my doctor’s orders, I walk with as much vigor as I can to welcome this new “spare part” in my knee.  Over the Thanksgiving weekend, I noticed this message on a bumper sticker on a parked car in NYC:

Remember the music is not in the piano.                            

My immediate response was visceral.  Are WE the instruments in the chorus, the harmony and the dissonance of the world?  Daily, we not only have the opportunity to share our own melody, we have the chance and challenge to tune into others’ music, to influence them to hear and share their song, to orchestrate harmony and synchronize symphonies in our otherwise mediocre moments.

Daily, we’re also offered opportunities to create discord and dissonance – noise. The choice is ours.
