Seed tomorow with wise and active compassion today.
Yesterday, it took me almost 5 1/2 hours to drive from one hotel to another in Atlanta. I was one of the fortunate ones. A few minutes after the end of my journey, both freeways on which I traveled were closed due to truck pile ups and immovable traffic. I’m feeling blessed to have “slipped” through the little window of time that allowed me to arrive to my destination. Some have been stuck in the cars for 24 hours, over 1300 children spent the night at their schools, people are sleeping on patio furniture at HOme Depot and on floors in grocery stores.
To help, there are people who live near expressways who have packed coolers with food and water and are distributing it to those who are still sitting ont he freeways. Some have been walking from car to car since last night. To assist them, Mother Nature has finally raised the temperature to 13 degrees. One young man put it this way:
How could I possibly sit comfortably in my warm home with food at my fingertips and let fellow humans suffer? What if, in one of those cars, was your mother or father? Your sister or brother? Your daughter or son? Your husband or wife? Wouldn’t you want someone would help? Any compassionare and responsible person would do what I’m doing.
Your words, young man, were a butter knife to my heart. Many compassionate and responsible people felt deep empathy as we sat watching the news of what was unfolding. I unfortunately must say, that although I’m not near a highway, it never crossed my mind to venture out and help my sisters and brothers. Shame on me. Thank you for the example. Next time, may I know better, and do better.
