Seed tomorrow with wise grace today!

This morning, as I enter my 62nd year on Earth, I wake up in a beautiful little B&B in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan.  Embraced by a comfortable, relaxed morning, I stare at the frozen river piled on the edges with snow, welcoming the reflection of lessons learned over several decades – even the ones I resisted and particularly the ones I attempted to avoid as they headed my way!

In silence I feel mom’s embrace from the other side as she reminds me of one of the most valuable examples she left behind – grace.  There’s a peace that flows over me in moments of fear, challenge, anger and judgment as I, with great clarity, can still hear the words in her voice:

Grace.  Today, Marilynn, choose grace.

So, my birthday wish: May I have the discipline to live in her words with increased honesty and consistency.  Thank you, mom.

Seed tomorrow with wise scripting today!

In his book, Produced by Faith, DeVon Franklin parallels the process of life with movie making, stating:

You are God’s partner. God is the director and you are the star – always in production.

Life, like any great movie, requires clarity of our story. And, development begins when we have the first glimmer of the big idea of our life. Movie scenes have purpose and actors know the motivation for each and every scene. Having perspective therefore means being awake to the intention of our life and the scenes within our story, and operating by the seat of our purpose.

We are therefore in control of: The clarity of our intentions, how we prepare for what might happen and how we respond to what does. May we stay in our own movie, never in comparison, and always in self-exploration – defining and clarifying our own script.

Seed tomorrow with wise living today!

It seems like forever since I’ve been able to sit in front of a TV and watch the Olympic opening ceremonies and several of the events that follow. My goodness, I’m enthralled with the dedication to excellence fellow humans possess! Watching the production, the athletes, the history of a complex nation and the family in friends in the stands gives me goose pimples. And, it all takes me back to my childhood. We watched from the minute we woke to the last moment before bedtime. I hear echoes of Peggy Fleming, the American figure skater in the1968 Winter Olympics:

The first thing is the love your sport. Never do it to please someone else. It has to be yours.

And, isn’t that true for life itself? It’s all too easy and much too tragic to live for what others would want for us. Although it’s challenge, creating a life worth living for oneself seems the real purpose for our existence. So, our pursuits continue . . .

Seed tomorrow with wise seeing today!

I reposted this on Facebook at the beginning of the year and decided it was worth contemplating in this first week of the second month of new opportunities:

A young couple moves into a new neighborhood. The next morning while they are eating breakfast, the young woman sees her neighbor hanging the wash outside. “That laundry is not very clean; she doesn’t know how to wash correctly. Perhaps she needs better laundry soap.” Her husband looks on, remaining silent. Every time her neighbor hangs her wash to dry, the young woman makes the same comments. A month later, the woman is surprised to see a nice clean wash on the line and says to her husband: “Look, she’s finally learned how to wash correctly. I wonder who taught her?” The husband replies, “I got up early this morning and cleaned our windows.”

And so it is with life . . . what we see when observing others depends on the clarity of the screen through which we look. Things change when we change the way we look at things.

So I’ll use 2014 as an opportunity to challenge myself to monitor any time and energy expended on quickly judging or criticizing another as a way to shift the investment into cleaning up my own act. Hard, I know; however, worth it.

Life is calling . . . Today’s the day . . . Make this moment matter!!
