Wednesday Wisdom

Seed tomorrow with wise “anyways” today!

Working in Boston for the second week – seriously looking forward to saying goodbye to winter!  Yesterday, I walked into the coordinator’s office and was met with one of my favorite messages from Mother Teresa:

People are unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered. Love them anyway.

If you do good, people may accuse you of selfish motives. Do good anyway.

If you are successful, you may win false friends and true enemies. Succeed anyway.

The good you do today may be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway.

Honesty and transparency make you vulnerable. Be honest and transparent anyway.

What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight. Build anyway.

People who really want help may attack you if you help them. Help them anyway.

Give the world the best you have and you may get hurt. Give the world your best anyway.

Enough said.

Seed tomorrow with your best today!

In the middle of a conversation with a difficult client who was in a particularly negative space, I heard myself sending non-stop messages to my brain (which made it difficult to listen) in an attempt to stay patient and maintain some compassion. As I did my best to hear him rants about those who report to him, the statement that rolled in my mind the most was:

If you want the best the world has to offer, offer the world your best.

How is it possible for someone to expect the world to provide them great stuff when they provide the opposite?  He was a reminder that it’s a good idea to stop asking what the world can give us and to start asking what we can provide instead?

Seed tomorrow with wise humility today!

I’ve come to understand there’s a difference between being humble and lacking confidence.  Of course, we can’t simply decide to have confidence and, voila – there it is.  It’s a process. And, for most of us, it comes with its challenges. Years ago, in a casual conversation someone said something I’ll never forget:

Being humble isn’t thinking less of yourself; it’s thinking about yourself less.

It’s not about devaluing ourselves. Whenever we put a small value on ourselves the world will not raise our price. That’s not why I write this (and, of course, I’m writing to myself).

I’ve noticed that wherever I am – at a cocktail party, facilitating a group that’s intimidating to me, delivering a keynote, in the middle of a disagreement with my husband – the situation itself doesn’t matter.  When I think about the other person, my stage fright and stress diminish, I have access to increased attention so I can sincerely listen to even what’s not being said, my angry decreases, and I forget about not having the confidence I wish I had. Strange, yet true for me.  You might want to give it a try.

(PS: These thoughts and feeling may be surfacing this morning because I’m preparing for a facilitated meeting I have this afternoon with a group of women in decision-making positions in organizations across the state.  And, they’re gathering with the intent to influence significant change. So, if you have a moment, please send me some energy – thank you!)

Seed tomorrow with wise scripting today!

I’m working in Mexico City this week, getting ready for the team to arrive this morning, contemplating a line my sister sent me from the movie Rango:

No one can walk away from their own story.

Ain’t that the truth! So, life is a continuous process of defining and clarifying the script by which we live it!

Have you noticed something different in those who have aligned their personality with their Higher Self?  Their story seems to unfold with intention, never in comparison with anyone else. Watch carefully and you’ll see their external “success” as the manifestation of internal triumphs. Then, congruency, alignment, and meaning follow.

Let’s embrace and stay faithful to who we are. Then, doors will open, not close.  And, our story will help reveal who we are with increased peace and fulfillment.
