Seed tomorrow with wise failing definition today!

Working in Atlanta this week. Wonderful people, wonderful work and equally wonderful food!

Smiled when I read this sign in an office at the Ritz Carlton Buckhead:

Failure is the condiment that gives success its flavor. – Truman Capote

I’m continuously amazed at the power of reframing and redefining. When we reach for something more, learn something new or challenge ourselves with a new goal, success isn’t always immediate nor guaranteed. Setbacks often reveal our character and teach us what we need to learn to eventually succeed. Ah, to reframe . . .

Seed tomorrow with completed work today!

It’s spring. Rebirth, resurrection and annual blooms that inspire renewed life unfold all around us, as always. And, once again, it’s cleansing time – the call to clear out winter’s lifeless, obsolete stuff and prepare for the fresh.

Purging began in my office, with a plan to move to my closet once the first project was done . . . however, as is historical for me, I found myself muddling through my wardrobe prematurely. Leaving the office a complete mess, eradication of all unused attire began.

In the middle of two spaces of disarray and chaos, a colleague came for a visit (at least she could see only one of the messes). One look at my workspace and I embarrassingly said:

Can anything be sadder than work unfinished?

To which she responded: Yes, work never begun.

I don’t subscribe to jumping from one unfinished project to another, or leaping from incomplete work toward a distracting shiny object; however, I must admit – I feel so much better after her comment!

Seed tomorrow with a good kick in the pants today!

Sitting in silence in a hotel room in Philadelphia, I reflect upon the first quarter of my life in this year of 2014, and I find myself disappointed (yet again). How have I not achieved the goals I set for myself at the beginning of the year? Immediately the rationalization begins: I’ve been busier than I expected to be, this & that happened unexpectedly, and then there was . . . then I look up at my computer and see a little note I had written yesterday, screaming Theodore Roosevelt’s words:

If you could kick the person in the pants responsible for most of your trouble, you wouldn’t sit for a month.

Yep, it’s time to knock it off and give myself a good enough kick to move the inertia into action. And you??!!

Seed tomorrow with excellence today!

We keep the Russian tradition of filling a basket with rich foods to be blessed and then consumed after liturgy on Easter Sunday. It stuffs the tummies and souls after a long fast. So, we prepare paska (braided bread), kielbasa, ham, horseradish, hrudka (Russian cheese) poppy seed and nut rolls, colored Easter eggs, wine -and the list goes on. No doubt, this is a tradition that will die with my generation.

I have the pleasure of making the pasta and poppy seeds & nut rolls for dad, my 5 siblings and myself. It’s always a two a half day process. Each year, as the food is being blessed, I stare in awe at baskets filled with elaborate Byzantine-crossed, dough braided exquisite paskas and shrink in sadness at my simple plops of dough.

Last night, as I finished my last batch of bread, I decided I’d pay homage to those who have more skills, patience and expertise than I. Placing the last plain, yet I’m certain tasty paska in the freezer (because I won’t be in town to make them the week before Easter), I made a commitment to remember John F Kennedy’s words as the baskets were blessed and I start feeling unworthy:

The ancient Greek definition of happiness was the full use of your powers along the lines of excellence.

Cheers to all those women who take delight in and contribute excellence to the culinary artistry of paska excellence! Knowing what it takes to produce their final product, it’s a spiritual moment to simply look upon their art form with wonder and appreciation.

Seed tomorrow with wonder and awe today!

Curt and I are walking down 84th Street, toward Central Park, on the Upper West Side of Manhattan with our enchanting grandson, Reid, waddling in between us. At just over a year, his gate is more a wobbly run than a walk. And, of course, people walking toward us continuously stop, smile and, with delight, comment about “how cute.”

Suddenly, Reid stops . . . with great wonder and awe, he notices his shadow. He immediately stares intently and then his eyes widen as our outlines come into his focus as well. So, we start “playing” with the figures to help him understand they’re a part of who we are rather than something disconnected from our existence. In that moment, Ralph Waldo Emerson’s words echo in my head:

Most of the shadows of this life are caused by our standing in our own sunshine.

Thank you for the reminder, Ralph and Reid. May we all remember to get out of our own way and play rather than shrink in the darkness we organically generate.
