Our Little One turns 34 today! Wow!

Amanda has always been strong and determined, with an abundance of joy. Like all of us, the maturing process made it mandatory for her to descend into some dark valleys, fight some dragons, look deeply into her own mirror, and struggle with a few shadows. As a result, she’s risen from the residue of her young self, and continues to thread together the remnants of struggle, despair, learning, and triumph as she transforms into a woman of strength, wisdom and grace. I look at her today, and she reminds me of the adage:

When writing the story of your life, don’t let anyone else hold the pen.

It takes time, pain and typically, unwanted struggle to get to that place; however, a diamond is simply a piece of coal that did well under pressure. Happy Birthday and Good-on-ya, Little One!

Seed tomorrow with wise becoming today!

Our first born celebrated her 37th birthday this week . . . 37????!!! How did that happen?

Like all of you, many experiences have changed my life. For me, none has been as significant as raising children. To be an effective parent, I immediately knew I needed to look deeply in the mirror and be brutally honest about what I needed to change. Then, I actually had to go about the changing. And, the process has never stopped. As Paulo Coelho pointed out:

Stop being who you were and become who you are.

Joseph Campbell stated it slightly differently:

The privilege of a lifetime is becoming who you are.

For me, it continues to evolve; at times, intense, frustrating and depressing; other times satisfying, rewarding and exhilarating. And, I’m forever grateful to those who taught me lessons along the way – our daughters consistently providing the greatest ones.

Wednesday Wisdom

Seed tomorrow with wise writing of your script today!

Our 94 year old dad fell in a parking lot, broke his hip, asked a stranger to help him into his car, and drove himself home. Lord, members of the Greatest Generation are determined!

As tough as he is, the battle to survive has been challenging. His heart isn’t cooperating and he therefore can’t handle physical therapy required in the journey to move again.

In a need for distraction, I opened my email and “fell upon” an old message sent by my dear friend and colleague, Chris Clarke-Epstein from a Game of Thrones episode:

The would be King Stannis Baratheon declared: I will not become a page in someone else’s history book.

In all his feistiness, this is a good frame through which to look when I stare at the now frail man I call dad. May I never forget that I own the pen and have more control than I think over the story.

Yey . . .Curt and I get to work together again, this time in Chicago. What a fabulous city! Waiting for our flight in the Detroit terminal, I overheard one person say to another:

So let’s remember that discipline will be the bridge between our goals and what we actually achieve.

Thank you, stranger. I needed that reminder today!
