Seed tomorrow with wise pretending today!

In just a couple days, children will be outfitted in scary, creepy, ghoulish, silly and sometimes outrageous garb as they beg for goodies. I love Halloween! I’m especially delighted by watching the little ones who look like it’s their first run at such a bazaar evening. Now that I’m a gramma, I can appreciate Erma Bombeck’s statement:

A grandmother pretends she doesn’t know who you are on Halloween.

In fact, now that I’m blessed to play the best role on the planet, I have a new found appreciation and enthusiasm for the joys and benefits of all kinds of good make-believing!

In a meeting yesterday, a frustrated young man, with a loud voice and a grand gesture stated, “Somebody’s got to do something about that!” I wish I could remember who recently reminded me that when that is stated, we all need to hear Jerry Garcia whispering in our ear:

Somebody has to do something, and it’s just incredibly pathetic that it has to be me.

Oh darn . . . and oh, of course.

Seed tomorrow with wise discipline today!

This week I’m working with a team that is tasked with closing the gap between their annual targets and their actual accomplishments before the end of the year. Grumbling and moaning concluded at the beginning of the meeting, as a result of a young engineer’s comment:

Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishments. So, let’s get focused.

This young woman is a reminder that it doesn’t matter if it’s an individual aspiration or a collective aim, discipline is the conduit between what is desired and what is realized.

Seed tomorrow with wise acting rightly today!

I continue to be amazed by the enormous variations in human behavior – and, even more mesmerized by those who think and act as though life results are random. A few members of a team I’m working with this week have repeatedly reminded me of Aristotle’s thought:

Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but we rather have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.

Consistent lack of excellence is created by consistent behaviors as well! Individually and collectively . . . our choice.

Seed tomorrow with wise carrying today!

Last week I worked with a great team at the Ford Louisville Assembly Plant. You know how one person simply stands out in a crowd? That describes team member Cyndi Morrell. A global process strategy specialist, Cyndi is a consummate professional. She’s a bright light in even the most stressful moments. She thinks deeply, extends her skills and support freely and is a never ending supply of encouragement. I’ve benefited immensely from her insight and wisdom. In a passing conversation she overheard me verbalize something I needed and of course, shortly thereafter, I received an email that satisfied that need. This message was underneath her contact information:

It’s not the load that breaks you down, it’s the way you carry it.

No surprise, I’ve observed Cyndi packing her capacity to the point of overflow, strategically heaping on the necessary resources to succeed, shifting her cargo as required to move forward, never allowing the weight of any situation to detour her attitude or behaviors, and gracefully embracing the burdens that naturally come with the work. Everyone around her benefits from the way she chooses to carry her load. Lessons for all of us!
