Seed tomorrow with wise welcoming today

Curt and I walked into the Atlanta Renaissance Concourse Hotel and headed straight to the Club Lounge where we met Mr. Clarke. He greeted us with a genuine warmth that made us feel like we had just entered his home. We ate, talked and completely enjoyed our evening.

The next morning in a session with the front office staff, we discussed what differentiates them from other hotels in the area. In response to what makes their Club Lounge exceptional, the entire room answered in unison, “Mr. Clark.”

That night we shared that with William Clarke and humbly stated:

When I hired in, 18 years ago, the General Manager told me, “Just make people feel like they’re in your home.”

Gee, that works, doesn’t it?! What a difference it would make if we regularly received service that made us feel that welcomed.

Seed tomorrow with wise bettering today

Some days, I just have all the luck! Attempting to purge my overstuffed office, I ran across this statement by William Faulkner:

Don’t bother to be better than your contemporaries or predecessors. Try to be better than yourself.

Competing with your better self can create a shift. Consciously improving your thoughts and actions day-by-day, month-by-month, year-by-year – which means moment-by-moment . . . a rivalry worth the battle!

Seed tomorrow with wise gratitude today

Have you ever read a message from centuries ago and wondered how such wisdom flowed from such ancient beings? And, why the words continue to speak to us today? How about this one:

Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all the others.
~ Cicero

Yeah, if he actually said that, it was stated before Christ. And, I don’t know about you; however, centuries later, I need the reminder.

Seed tomorrow with wise “mothering” today

Today, our first grandchild turns 2 years old. Bliss, complete and wondrous bliss. And, I equally delight in observing the mastery our daughter seems to naturally possess to nurture his learning and creativity. That in mind, it was a gift to run across Barbara Katz Rothman’s thought:

Birth is not only about making babies. It’s about making mothers ~ strong, competent, capable mothers who trust themselves and believe in their inner strength.

I’ve not only watched mom grow into herself, I’ve also experienced his father, aunt, uncle, other family members, friends and in a few cases, strangers, expand who they are in his presence. Little ones have the ability to remind us from where we come. Trusting ourselves to be authentic in their presence allows us to know ourselves more accurately and allows them to develop a belief in their inner strength while strengthening our own.

PS: On the Today show this morning, Reece Witherspoon stated, “The more people who love us, the better our lives.” May we all be as loved as this Little Guy is today.
