Seed tomorrow with wise service today

Last week, Curt and I worked at the US Grant Hotel, a landmark of San Diego, built by Ulysses S. Grant Jr. in honor of his father, the 18th President of the United States. Rich with history, elegance and distinction, the property and its staff are completely classy. In the employee lunchroom (one of our favorite places to hang out in a hotel), was a sign that read:

If you want to find yourself, lose yourself in service of others.

In my youth, I don’t think I would’ve understood such a notion. I would have read it as a nice quotation, yet without sufficient experience or wisdom, I wouldn’t have grasped the essence of its significance. Today and tomorrow, may I serve well.

Seed tomorrow with wise behavior today

The recent political debate coverage, full of arrogance and babbling makes my head, heart and soul hurt. And, the certainty with which some candidates spew what “God” has in mind for us is frightening. Perhaps it’s a reminder to take a deeper look at myself:

Your beliefs don’t make you a better person; your behavior does.

May people have little doubt about our beliefs as they see them translated through our actions, since all the gibberish in the world will not disguise them.

Life is calling . . . Today’s the day . . . Make this moment matter!!

Wednesday Wisdom

Seed tomorrow with wise action today

Sitting on a balcony, looking out at the calming waters of San Diego, I began thinking about the disappointments I’ve experienced by breaking promises I’ve made to myself – promises I would never break with another human. However, somehow, I’ve made it okay to break promises to myself.

So, I ask me: What dreams do you have about what you want to do, have, or to become; however, find yourself frustrated by not moving in that direction?

If the words, “I’m going to . . .” whisper from your mind; yet, you actually don’t do, perhaps this old adage needs to be repeated:

When all is said and done, typically more is said than done.

I need this reminder more often than I’d like to admit. Our thoughts and words begin the process; however, it’s the action we take in the direction of what we want that makes the difference.

While working in Birmingham, Alabama a couple weeks ago, I ran across this sign and immediately captured the words:

A head full of fears has no space for dreams.

Yet another reason to be attentive to our thoughts and develop the mental discipline to manage them wisely.
