Seed tomorrow with wise Thanksgiving today

Like many of you, tomorrow I’ll reflect upon gratefulness. What matters most? Is my time, attention and effort channeled in the direction of what I declare is most important? Will I regret where I invested my time, therefore my life when I’m my dad’s age of 96? Asking those questions often surfaces other questions, like “how do I know?” Johann Wolfgang Goethe’s words from over two centuries ago helps with internal responses:

A man sees in the world what he carries in his heart.

Starting there not only gives clarity, it also gives clues about the world as we perceive it. Although we think the world is as we see it, in actuality, we see it as we are. A life of gratitude can transform common, routine days into Thanksgivings. Happy heart-filled gratitude to all!

Seed tomorrow with wise cracks today

This week, as Curt and I celebrate 41 years of marriage, we reflect upon our history and imagine our future. The past 4 decades with this travel partner have taught me more and have had deeper meaning than I ever anticipated. So, when I read this quotation attributed to Leonard Cohen I can’t help but think about how differently I embrace love, commitment, and relationship because of experience:

There’s a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.

Vulnerability, tenderness, raw, naked exposure of your true self, commitment, cherish, sacrifice, respect, and holding hands to embrace all the adventures life offers may feel like walking on thin ice at times. Ultimately, it could and probably will crack, and that’s okay. Taking the risk of sauntering into the unknown together, respecting flaws and shortcomings, eventually laughing at misfortune, finding the treasure in adversity and remaining hopeful within each day illuminates the path and welcomes a lighter journey with all our fellow travelers.

Seed tomorrow with wise thinking today

I read, sit, ponder and take good notes as I attempt to live my best life. No matter how many times I review notions about mind over matter, I find it all too easy to “allow” people and things to cause me angst. Born in 121 AD, Marcus Aurelius knew this – yet, we’re still working on it!

You have power over your mind – not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.

Although I continue to improve, it’s on my 2016 short list of areas for improvement (yet once again). And, the upcoming holiday season will surely offer plenty of opportunities to practice mind re-wiring before the New Year!

Seed tomorrow with wise liberation today

I haven’t read Marilyn Ferguson’s work for years. So, on a flight to Charlotte, I was happy to find an article featuring her. She reminded me:

Your past is not your potential. In any hour you can choose to liberate the future.

It’s easy to think of change, transition, liberation and the future as grand and complicated, therefore, becoming stuck in our own historical obstacles to forward motion.

Of course, we can also make it simple. So, I tell myself to reflect, let go and envision the desired outcome. Stop focusing on the details of “how to.” Perhaps “enjoying the journey” means letting the forward motion take care of the complicated details and allowing the great adventure to unfold. Just keep taking one step at a time in the direction of your desired outcome. It’s got to be more fun to walk into the future, or perhaps salsa, unshackled by our cumbersome past.
