Wednesday Wisdom

Seed tomorrow with wise appreciation today

My 64th year is upon me. Yikes, it’s hard to believe how fast the years come and go. And, each one teaches me to appreciate more and grumble less since life is unthinkably fast and fragile. I’ve begun my list of 64 reasons to be grateful, to be completed by the “big day” at the end of the week. And, as I ponder what’s most important, my thoughts never stray far from those who have loved me and given me sustenance, and who I deeply cherish and want to support. As Audrey Hepburn put it:

The best thing to hold onto in life is each other.

I respectfully bow my head in honor and gratitude to those who love more and judge less, who invest their minds in compassion rather than criticism and who have learned the art of encouragement and validation rather than disapproval and condemnation.

Life is calling . . . Today’s the day . . . Make this moment matter!!

Seed tomorrow with wise happy today

Have you ever watched someone chase happiness? Yearning, searching, and scratching to be happy? And, have you noticed that the pursuit is typically sad to observe and futile in results? Denis Waitley offers this thought:

Happiness cannot be traveled to, owned, earned, worn or consumed. Happiness is the spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace, and gratitude.

Someone once told me that to be happy, you must give happy . . . each year, that comment makes more sense!

Seed tomorrow with wise love today

This weekend, many will exchange cards, chocolate and other caring gestures in honor of Valentine’s Day. In our youth, love is often somewhat shallow, isn’t it? A bit mystical, often awkward or confusing and even more often, misinterpreted. As we age, and hopefully mature, love takes on meanings with profoundly different implications. Thousands of years ago, Lao Tzu explained it this way:

Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage.

The process of loving another, especially unconditionally, changes who we are. As complicated as it may seem at times, love is a path that can bind rather than separate, heal rather than harm, forgive rather than blame, include rather than isolate, welcome rather than reject and grow rather than shrink.

Perhaps this Valentine’s Day we can expand our version of love.

Seed tomorrow with wise freedom today

If you haven’t read Victor Frankel’s book, Man’s Search for Meaning, it’s a must. Difficult, however, essential. As an Austrian neurologist, psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor, he writes about what he learned. As I read his words, I’m horrified that humans could possibly treat others in such inhumane ways. On the other hand, his insights into the mindset of those who survived, his conclusions about human development and his desire to share what he learned are insights that I have taken decades to process.

Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.

When struggling with what I perceive as a debilitating moment, I can simply think of him and it takes me to my knees.

Each man is questioned by life; and he can only answer to life by answering for his own life; to life he can only respond by being responsible.

Answering to life . . . wow, I have a long way to go. And, when my “yeah buts” start . . .

When we are no longer able to change a situation … we are challenged to change ourselves.
