Seed tomorrow with wise gratitude today

Continuing a focus of giving thanks beyond the one “official” day of Thanksgiving, we can contemplate Melody Beattie’s words:

Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.

And, thinking, then acting, makes it so . . .

Life is calling . . .  Today’s the day . . . Make this moment matter!!

Seed tomorrow with wise gratitude today

Life changes significantly when gratitude is practiced throughout the year. However, for many, there’s an increased focus on our blessing that adds richness and texture to our Thanksgiving celebrations.  As Albert Schweitzer noted:

At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us.

Doing so helps us rise above the ordinary to see the extra-ordinary in every day moments and in people we routinely encounter in those days.  Hundreds of years ago, John Milton spoke of it as:

Gratitude bestows reverence, allowing us to encounter everyday epiphanies, those transcendent moments of awe that change forever how we experience life and the world.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone – tomorrow  . . . and every day.
Life is calling . . .  Today’s the day . . . Make this moment matter!!

Seed tomorrow with wise choices today

Forty two years ago, today, I joined “in life forever” with the man of my dreams. Although I didn’t realize it then, receiving unlimited support, never-ending compassion, especially when I felt unworthy of it, and unconditional acceptance have taught me the essence of genuine love, respect and admiration.

Watching him kindly work with my father’s difficult demeanor, caring for my mom as she slowly deteriorated with severe dementia, parenting two beautiful little girls who have grown into exceptional women, being the grampa who evokes giggles that are born heaven, and embracing all of me – even and especially those parts that are far from pretty . . . nothing could separate me from this magnificent man.  As Joseph Campbell put it, Curt and our family:

Are the WE in me.

The definition of who I am is deeply dependent on those who live within my heart and soul.  Today I celebrate a life with a man I adore. I celebrate what we’ve struggled through and raised above by holding hands and crossing life’s streets together. I celebrate someone who helps me feel competent, sustained and valued. I wish the same for everyone reading these words. Perhaps more importantly – may you be that person for those you love.

Life is calling . . .  Today’s the day . . . Make this moment matter!!

Seed tomorrow with wise healing today

As Americans, we have the admiration of the world for our peaceful transfer of power.  Last night, obviously many were thrilled and others, horrified.  Some raised their glass to the toast of victory while others crawled under the covers, not wanting to surface for years. May we heal quickly, come together even quicker and get to work with serious issues we face as a nation.

The soul always knows what to do to heal itself. The challenge is to silence the mind.

                                                                                                                                              ~ Caroline Myss

May the mean, divisive, angry, hateful rhetoric stop and the language of unity and the exploration of solutions begin.  And, let’s face it  – that will require an enormous amount of prayer.

Seed tomorrow with wise opportunities today

A couple weeks ago, I worked with a client who was far too young to be so miserable.  In our conversation, he expressed dissatisfaction with his work, his annoying co-workers and incompetent leaders who overlooked his talents. When I asked about his alternatives he responded, “Alternatives? Are you asking me to make some sort of change?  It’s this place and these people, not me!” And I found myself mystically verbalizing something I had read or heard somewhere in the distant past:

You can look for difficulties in your opportunities OR you can look for opportunities in your difficulties.  Whatever you seek, you shall find.

We maintain more sanity when we change what we can and change our thinking about what we can’t. And, I’ve noticed that letting go seems to be easier with each passing decade.
