Wednesday Wisdom

Seed tomorrow with wise thinking and sharing today

After reading last week’s Wednesday Wisdom (below) Eileen McDargh, masterful author, facilitator, emcee, motivational speaker and speech coach, wrote, “Also  . . . what passes for “knowledge” is often merely “data to support what you believe to be fact.” Hence alternative “facts.”

It’s too easy to believe we are right, that our analysis is the one and only one to consider, that our ideas are correct, and our opinions are truth. As a student of Dr. Deming, I had drilled into my mind:

An idiot with a mouth can have an opinion.

To understand each other, to keep our thoughts clear, and to expand our ability to enter the realm of wisdom, let’s all go deeper.

LAST WEEK: Curt and I are working in Naples Beach with an unusual amount of “down time,” so we people watch – the cheapest form of entertainment on the planet!  At the pool, we overhear a young, arrogant know-it-all, armed with a plethora of data to support his position, engage in a demeaning monologue aimed at an elderly gentlemen. After patiently and attentively listening, the man with maturity offered a seasoned alternative, framing the same information in an experienced, weathered way – immediately reminding me of advice an elder gave me years ago:

Never mistake knowledge for wisdom.

It appears people seldom change their mind or their position when insulted, offended or made to feel wrong. Listening to understand and responding with respect offers us the ability to expand our understanding of issues. Let’s face it, most of us only gather data that support our opinion. As challenging as it may be to listen to that which doesn’t align with our thoughts, it often enhances perspective – critical on the journey to wisdom.

Wednesday Wisdom

Seed tomorrow with wise grace today

Ended The National Speakers Association’s annual convention with fireworks over Epcot.  Learning, laughing and hugging were abundant since friends from around the world see each other once a year.

There were so many presentations, workshops and labs, it’s always hard to pin point the few take-aways that I’ll actually implement.  However, I always walk away with too much to ponder, like the words from a song quoted by Suzie Humphreys:

There must be a place where shame meets grace.

I’m certain it’s beneficial for each of us to sit in silence and discover that space.

Seed tomorrow with wise independence today

Yesterday, as we celebrated Independence Day, I reposted this:

May we think of freedom, not as the right to do as we please, but as the opportunity to do what is right.

As Americans, it seems we’ve forgotten the responsibility that comes with privilege.  As Eleanor Roosevelt wrote:

Freedom makes a huge requirement of every human being. With freedom comes responsibility. For the person who is unwilling to grow up, the person who does not want to carry his own weight, this is a frightening prospect.

Let Freedom Ring!
