Seed tomorrow with wise kindness today
We buried my mom’s 95 year old twin sister this weekend – my second mother. Because she was more assertive and vocal than mom, I received more verbal lessons from her. My “kindness capacity” is minuscule compared to the twins. Therefore, it makes sense that, as we shared stories following the funeral, the first one that surfaced first for me was about compassion.
As a young teenager, I made a mean, judgmental statement about another person. Hours later, Aunt Helen pulled me aside and shared this:
Your mom and I were twins, which already made us visible in the church. And, our dad (my grampa) was the Cantor, which only made us more observable. People in the church constantly made cruel, disapproving comments about us in their mother tongue, Slavonic. However, they had no idea we understood the language.
Of course, my first comment was: How long did it take you to respond in Slavonic and call them out? My Aunt’s response (I paraphrase):
My dear Marilynn . . . what would that response have said about us? NEVER allow the behavior of someone you do not respect to define your behavior . . . never let that person to define who you are. If they had kind to give, perhaps that’s how they would have behaved. We can’t give what we don’t have. Let’s practice kindness.
I now have two sacred, wise women on the other side I will ask for guidance in all my remaining days.
Life is calling . . . Today’s the day . . . Make this moment matter!!
Learn Lavishly. Live Significantly. Leave a Legacy.
