Wednesday Wisdom

Seed tomorrow with wise gestures today

Curt and I checked into a hotel in Las Vegas and had a conversation with a lovely front desk Welcome Agent, originally from Iowa. When I inquired about her hometown, she shared this:

Recently, renovations have been non-stop in Des Moines, which has had an impact on The University of Des Moines Children’s Hospital. Young cancer patients call the 10th floor home, which now overlooks the University football stadium, meaning they can watch all the home games.

ONE game, ONE small group of people, after ONE touchdown, decided to turn toward the 10th floor, cheer and wave to the children. It felt good, so they continued the gesture after the next touchdown. Quickly, the behavior caught on. Soon, the entire stadium joined in – turned, cheered and waved, including the marching band that held their instruments in the air and saluted to the tiny ones . . . all were elated. This behavior is now the tradition at the stadium – starting with one moment of thoughtfulness and compassion for others.

Anthropologist, Margaret Mead wrote: Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.

Seed tomorrow with wise love today

Last week, the brilliant author, educator, consultant, coach and professional speaker, Chris Clarke-Epstein posted this Martin Luther quotation I had never heard before:

I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear.

Chris – this year, may I breathe in more love and therefore have more to exhale. Love, only love, especially in those luring moments of seductive judgment and disgust.

Seed tomorrow with wise aging today

Adults, I find this particularly appropriate in today’s world:

We have enough youth. What we need is a fountain of smart.

I wish I knew who wrote this so I could give credit as I beseech elders to step back and reflect upon their disdain of aging.  This year, what a difference it would make with an increased  investment of focused time and intentional energy to allow our years, experiences, and insights to unfold as examples of wisdom and grace.

Seed tomorrow with artisan behavior today

In the midst of a bombardment by “leaders” of the sleaziest variety in too many places, Pope Francis, in his New Year’s Eve homily, spoke of the choice of good in human kind. He reminded us that the most influential people actually walk among us day-after-day:

The artisans of the common good who love their city not with words but with deeds . . . without giving speeches, without publicity, but with a style of practical education for daily life.

Today, I commit to increased attention and gratitude to such artisans and decreased focus on the appalling, offensive ignorance of those receiving daily attention.  And, I welcome the hope of thinking that you and I have the potential of becoming artisans of the common good.

Seed tomorrow with wise kindness today

Happy New Year!  Welcome to another 365 circles around the sun, offering magnificent opportunities to create a life worth living!

I read this last week and immediately made it part of my 2018 plan:

Do one act of kindness each day of the year and change 365 lives.

Certainly, with this purposeful intention, my life will be the one that changes the most! And, the rest . . . you never know . . .
