Wednesday Wisdom

Seed tomorrow with wise appreciation today

This week, we’ve been roaming vineyards in Northern Michigan. Yesterday, at Mari winery, we learned that the owners ran out of time while planting, so they made a desperate call to family and friends to finish establishing the beds. Elated when all the roots were in their homes they gasped as they realized they had neglected to give clear instructions to one team that specific grapes needed be pulled from specific varietal boxes, planted together, and segregated by rows.

Once the reality sank in, rather than yanking the plants from the soil, they enjoy an annual surprise of what Row 7 produces. Every year it’s unique, interesting and often complex.

Diversity is something we all have in common – let’s celebrate and savor.

Seed tomorrow with wise striving today

When I was a little girl, we weren’t allowed to watch much TV; however, every four years the Olympics were a constant on our little black and white tube from the opening ceremony to the end. Once I returned from school, I was mesmerized by each event until bedtime. So, it’s been fun to observe our young grandchildren as they’re being introduced to the competitions.

Twenty four year old Mirai Aileen Nagasu, the 3-time Four Continent medalist and 6-times US national medalist figure skater from Montebello, California, summed up her experience:

Failure is inevitable – it’s the people that keep trying who become successful.

One doesn’t have to be an athlete to benefit from those words.

Seed tomorrow with wise love today

Happy Valentine’s Day!  On this day, and every day, here are two things we can we can offer others:

If you only have one smile in you give it to the people you love. ~ Maya Angelou

Hugs were invented to let people know you love them without saying anything. ~ Bill Keane

Looking back, I missed a lot of moments when smiles and hugs were needed.  Looking forward, I pray to be more attentive so I don’t repeat the regret.

Seed tomorrow with wise kindness today

This morning, we left the house at O dark thirty to arrive on time for Curt’s double hernia surgery. Here’s a synopsis of my conversation with his attending nurse a couple hours after the procedure:

Him: You’re married to an exceptional man.

Me: Thank you. I agree, he’s an absolute treasure.

Him: I’ve been doing this for decades and must say, I’ve met very few people who are as kind, thoughtful and respectful.

Me: Oh my, as you so wonderfully care for people, I wish I would hear that you meet people with those qualities all the time!

Him: In the first few minutes with him, still heavily sedated, I felt a literal ‘saintliness’ about him.

Me: (Avoiding the urge to reply with something like, “He’d have to be a saint to be married to me,” I more reverently said): Even his daughters, who have known him their entire lives would agree with your description . . . Believe me, I know I’m a blessed woman.

A huge shout out to all the men on this glorious planet who walk through life respectfully, including the exceptional nurse who so wonderfully helped Curt get back on his feet.
