Seed tomorrow with wise compassion today

Yesterday was my husband’s 67^th birthday and each year my respect for his choice about who to be in the world increases. Curt was not raised in an easy family, nor was he intentionally taught integrity, character, compassion or kindness. Yet, his example challenges me to be a better person on a daily basis. Coincidentally (or serendipity) I re-read this yesterday and post it in honor of Curt’s essence:

A mind committed to compassion is like an overflowing reservoir, a constant source of energy, determination and kindness. ~ Dalai Lama

Happy Birthday, Curt! Thank you for the example you set for me, our daughters and grandsons. May you consistently receive the same kindness you extend to the world.

Seed tomorrow with wise legacy making today

Last Thursday, colleagues and dear friends traveled from around the country to Madison, Wisconsin in support of the National Speakers Association of Wisconsin’s initiation of a new award: The Chris-Clarke-Epstein Legacy Award. Chris had no idea the evening was about honoring her. As a past president of the chapter (and of NSA national), she arrived prepared to induct new board members and to support the recipients of this year’s awards – to serve, as she always does.

William James wrote of legacy:

The great use of life is to spend it for something that will outlast it.

There are so many reasons why Chris would be honored in such a profound way. Our story is the greatest legacy we leave for those who love us and for those whose hearts have been touched by our being. Chris’s consistent servant-leadership, her passion for sharing intense learning, as well as her desire to bring out the best in others has permeated the souls of countless people around the world. How fabulous that she can have a glimpse at her legacy while she still walks Earth.

Congratulations Chris. It’s an honor and a privilege to have crossed paths with you in this human journey. I am blessed to be the recipient of your wisdom.

Seed tomorrow with wise marks today

I was immensely saddened as I read of Anthony Bourdain’s choice to eliminate his pain last week. Although I was not a fan of his vulgarity, his humanity, depth, compassion, inclusion and passion for adventures that helped him understand the global human condition by breaking bread with others trumped any language he used to describe his thoughts and feelings. In his words:

As you move through this life and this world, you change things slightly, you leave marks behind, however small. And in return, life – and travel – leave marks on you. Most of the time, those marks – on your body or on your heart – are beautiful. Often, though, they hurt.

Rest in peace, Anthony. You left marks of kindness, a desire to learn and understand others and an example of passion for everything people and food on many of our lives.
