Seed tomorrow with wise emotional intelligence today
Last week, at our grandson’s elementary school, we attended a session of a course developed at Yale University, Emotions Matter. The concepts are being implemented in the classroom and people nurturing their little ones showed up to learn how to support emotional intelligence and revive civility in our culture. Behaviors spillover from home and the classroom into our larger community – so, I intensely support a focus on civility. It was standing room only!
The slide on the screen as we entered the classroom:
Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all. ~ Aristotle
One of the many great suggestions is to create a family Code of Living – a document, created by all family members, that helps establish a supportive, collaborative environment. Begin with feelings:
- How do you want to FEEL today? (Probably translates into every day)
- What will you do to have these feelings consistently & create our desired environment?
- How will you prevent and manage conflict & unwanted feelings?
It’s a process that takes time, and worth the investment. Once your family charter is established you can refer to it when conduct is in conflict with the agreed upon behaviors of the charter.
To create productive cultures, we create these in corporations . . . makes complete sense to establish them in our families!
Life is calling . . . Today’s the day . . . Make this moment matter!!
Learn Lavishly. Live Significantly. Leave a Legacy.
