Seed tomorrow with wise conversation today

Many of us are frustrated, disillusioned and out-rate outraged at current politics in the States; however, to avoid the inevitable angst and continued lack of understanding of “the other” view, we remain silent, which messes with our internal sense of integrity. I read this and it made sense:

Being taught to avoid talking about politics and religion has led us to a lack of understanding of politics and religion. What we need is to learn how to have civil conversations about difficult topics.

I’ve recently received several requests from municipalities to conduct sessions on civil discourse. Civil, the operative word is: civil. If we don’t learn to respectfully discuss our difference how else will we understand the intelligent opinions of those we love and respect who have a completely different point of view?

Seed tomorrow with wise responses today

Vicktor Emil Frankl, an Austrian neurologist and psychiatrist, who wrote Man’s Search for Meaning after his horrific experience in a concentration camp, teaches those who read his work about the possible dignity, nobility and responsibility within humanity.

Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to
choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.

It’s not the stimulus that creates the outcome as much as the choice. Although it’s often difficult to execute, even in the most dreadful moments, we must remember the responsibility of choice.

Seed tomorrow with wise attention today

I’ve discovered there is something called “word porn” and had a particular affinity to this text as it traveled through my head:

I am the kind of person who will restart a song because I got distracted and wasn’t appreciating it enough.

I too often do this in prayer. In the middle of devotions I find myself simply reciting words and the contemplation is completely amiss. So, I start over, hopefully, with more attention and intention.  I now wonder how often, in other parts of my life, I’m distracted and therefore incapable of breathing in and valuing the moment.

Seed tomorrow with wise values today

Had Anne Frank’s life not been cut short, she would have celebrated her 90th birthday last month. Last week, this was posted in The Daily Stoic, a blog our son-in-law, Blake, shared with me:

It’s a wonder I haven’t abandoned all my ideals, they seem so absurd and impractical. Yet I cling to them because I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart…I see the world being slowly transformed into a wilderness, I hear the approaching thunder that, one day, will destroy us too, I feel the suffering of millions. And yet, when I look up at the sky, I somehow feel that everything will change for the better, that this cruelty too shall end, that peace and tranquility will return once more. In the meantime, I must hold on to my ideals.

In our darkest hours, we’re tempted to abandon our ideals, our values, our virtues. Let these words remind us to remain steadfast, to insist that our values guide us, and to expect each step we take to lead us to the strength needed for the next moment.

Seed tomorrow with wise freedom today

Beginning in high school, I’ve read and pondered the words of French author, journalist and philosopher, Albert Camus. A sample of his thought provoking statements:

Freedom is nothing but a chance to be better.

In addition to the parades, barbeques and celebrations, this Independence Day, may we choose to know better and, as a result, do better as we enjoy our freedom.
