Wednesday Wisdom

Seed tomorrow with wise decisions today

I read this in the Detroit Free Press and began to breathe differently:

I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear.

Individually, and as a nation, it’s time to evaluate our choices and perhaps ask what other weakening encumbrances are reducing us, with little realization that we’ve chosen them. We’re sculpting ourselves and shaping our nation . . . please, let’s do it intentionally and with purposeful compassion.

Wednesday Wisdom

Seed tomorrow with wise discernment today

I’ve obviously been increasing my reading about effective leadership lately, including the behaviors of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, because of his legacy of remaining calm under attack, maintaining character in the midst of its lack, sustaining a commitment to a power greater than himself and a deep concern for the future of others over luxuries for himself.

Please know I understand ALL leaders are human and therefore complete with human flaws. I’m not attempting to present any leader as superhuman; however, as revealing their true essence, especially when under fire. And, guiding people with respect, honor and grace. His lessons will live for generations.

Injustice anywhere is a threat to injustice everywhere.

So I’m completely befuddled that there are citizens who don’t understand that. History has taught us well. Exchanging respect, honor and dignity at the altar of the illusion of a stable economy is a price America cannot afford to pay.

We stand in a time of brutal honestly, looking into our national mirror as we define ourselves. Who are we as a nation? What do we truly value? Will we carry forward the legacy of our founding citizens and the values of justice, dignity and inclusiveness?  Or, are we redefining ourselves as something less? Will we thrive as a community of diverse and contributing people, supported by policies that assist people in rising with opportunities? Or, will we continue to criticize, demean, denigrate and, in too many cases, demonize those who have opposing points of view?

Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.

With respectful, civil discourse, we need to talk about who we are and who we choose to be, because, on a daily basis, our behaviors are demonstrating that which we don’t talk about.

Seed tomorrow with wise light and love today

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led a peaceful movement during angst, fear, anxiety, anger, hatred and racism. Yet, in the midst of intense struggle and with certain frustration, he never criticized, condemned or ridiculed another. Rather, as a reverent, respectful leader, he rose above the noise and reminded us:

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.

Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.

May we extend Dr. King’s legacy by expecting respectful behaviors from our leaders and by being the light and love the world needs to overcome the increasing dim and disgusting words and actions of those who obviously need more light and love.

Seed tomorrow with wise reverence today

Monday, we lost a great American novelist, editor, highly esteemed Princeton University professor, and recipient of The Nobel Prize in literature, Toni Morrison. Thank you, Ms. Morrison, for consistently reminding us to keep our dignity and integrity no matter how cruel the circumstances.

Freeing yourself was one thing, claiming ownership of that freed self was another.

May we learn to hold our heads high when life gets rough.

If you wanna fly, you got to give up the thing that weighs you down.

May we let go of that which does not serve us.

Make a difference about something other than yourselves.

May we contribute in making this planet we all share safer, more compassionate and infinitely more wise.
