Wednesday Wisdom

Seed tomorrow with wise gratitude today

Today, I celebrate the beginning of my 68th journey around the sun. Time and experience have taught me that life is fast and fragile, and the importance of being more present within each day and more grateful for people, experiences and moments offered as life unfolds.

May we all experience full, fulfilled lives, which will be threaded with triumphs, pleasures and satisfactions, challenges, losses and setbacks, embracing each day as a blessing.

Seed tomorrow with wise living today!

This week, while digging through information about the creative process, Carl Jung’s words leaped off the page and slapped me up-side the head:

Nothing has a stronger influence psychologically on their environment and especially on their children than the unlived life of the parent. (I’ll add, grandparent, aunt, uncle, etc.)

Ouch!  And, written by one of my heroes!  Double ouch. The choice to semi-retire has been remarkably relaxing and has allowed me to ease into a contentment not previously experienced. However, it’s also been a seductive vehicle for a bit of complacency and passivity around experiencing a fully-lived life. So, my questions begin:

  • Who is it I long to become? (We’re never too old to contemplate this one)
  • What do I really crave from life? What yearnings are starved for attention?
  • What dreams have never seen the light of day?
  • Where do I hunger to contribute, yet am harassed by hesitation?
  • Before I leave Earth, what do I really want to experience?
  • What legacy will I leave to linger in the minds of those I love?

Best question of all: What is life asking of me?

As I prepare for my next 365 day journey around the sun, I contemplate these questions and more  . . .  you may want to consider a few as well.

Hell is when who you are meets who you could have been. ~ Ben Franklin

Seed tomorrow with wise discernment today

Most of us have heard, history repeats itself. And, that statement is typically coupled with, when we don’t learn from history. Yet, we continue to replicate patterns that result in less than admirable or honorable behaviors. Before we began to mark time by The Christ’s birth, this notion was already shared  (Virgil, 70 BC – 19 BC):

Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities.

When will we learn? Today, constant communication, especially social media, has made it remarkably easy to run campaigns grounded in alternative facts, propaganda and outright lies to accomplish self-serving outcomes, at the expense of our dignity, principles, and sense of decency.

Let’s be clear about a culture’s ability to cross the boundaries of morality, because, collectively, our toes are playing too close to the margins. We live in times of critical transitions. Each of us has the responsibility to dig deeper, fact-check and make decisions based on truth, grounded in facts. Hard work, yes; however, also necessary.

Seed tomorrow with wise truth telling today

The daughter of an aristocrat, Dame Edith Louisa Sitwell (1887 – 1964) became a well-known and controversial writer and poet in her day. Her work evoked a lot of conversation and her flat became a meeting place for young writers, including Dylan Thomas and Denton Welch. This sentence may help us understand why her words had people talking:

The public will believe anything as long as it’s not founded in truth.

This notion has never pierced my soul as painfully as it has recently. May we return to the essence of truth and insist on it as the foundation of our decision making. For, without truth, who are we?
