Seed tomorrow with wise history-making today!
In high school in the 1960s, I had a role in the musical South Pacific. I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair and Happy Talk still echo in my head every now and then. However, recently, the words to another song have been resonating in my soul:
You’ve got to be carefully taught.
You’ve got to be taught
To hate and fear,
You’ve got to be taught
From year to year,
It’s got to be drummed
In your dear little ear
You’ve got to be carefully taught.
You’ve got to be taught to be afraid
Of people whose eyes are oddly made,
And people whose skin is a diff’rent shade,
You’ve got to be carefully taught.
You’ve got to be taught before it’s too late,
Before you are six or seven or eight,
To hate all the people your relatives hate,
You’ve got to be carefully taught!
What we call history – the agreed upon story of those in power – is being displayed in our collective mirror. Our chronicled past has left out major events, contributions, pain, anguish and suffering of those not in power. Let the reflections remind us of our selectively documented past and the power of the history we are creating today. Future generations are observing, experiencing, and learning from our words, intentions, and actions.
Let’s not waste this healing moment.
