Wednesday Wisdom

Seed tomorrow with wise re-thinking today!

I don’t know who wrote this or I would give credit for words well written about a thought worth thinking:

Nothing should go back to normal.  Normal wasn’t working.

If we go back to the way things were, we will have lost the lesson.

May we rise up and do better

Collectively rise up . . . It’s time.

Seed tomorrow with wise re-thinking today!

Arundhati Roy writes:

Historically, pandemics have forced humans to break with the past and imagine their world anew. This one is no different. It is a portal, a gateway between one world and the next.

We can choose to walk through it, dragging the carcasses of our prejudice and hatred, our avarice, our data banks and dead ideas, our dead rivers and smoky skies behind us. Or, we can walk through lightly, with little luggage, ready to imagine another world. And, ready to fight for it.

It’s time.

Seed tomorrow with wise beauty-seeking today!

I wince as I read some of young Anne Frank’s words:

How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.

Words written by a teenage girl who kept a diary while she and seven others hid from Nazis in confined spaces for 2 years before being discovered and sent to concentration camps. Yet today, some complain about physical distancing and wearing a mask to protect others – shame on us.

And, in the midst of anguish, fear and real danger, she wrote:

Think of all the beauty still left around you and be happy.

While remaining intentional to contribute what I can to address the current realities of a pandemic, bias, discrimination, and injustice . . .  I breathe in that advice.

Seed tomorrow with wise perspective today!

July third, with great anticipation, we streamed the stage play Hamilton. Days later songs still hang in my head.

George Washington, who is portrayed as an older, more experienced statesman and soldier offers Hamilton morsels of perspective throughout the play. To an eager Alexander Hamilton, anxious to lead troops into battle and freedom, Washington reminds:

Dying is easy, young man. Living is hard.

Experiencing 2020 many can appreciate that notion.

Addressing Hamilton’s excitement following the Battle of Yorktown that translated into independence from British rule, Washington responds:

Winning is easy.  Governing is hard.

Experiencing 2020 many can appreciate that notion as well.

Seed tomorrow with wise history-making today!

In high school in the 1960s, I had a role in the musical South Pacific. I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair and Happy Talk still echo in my head every now and then. However, recently, the words to another song have been resonating in my soul:

You’ve got to be carefully taught.

 You’ve got to be taught

To hate and fear,

You’ve got to be taught

From year to year,

It’s got to be drummed

In your dear little ear

You’ve got to be carefully taught.

You’ve got to be taught to be afraid

Of people whose eyes are oddly made,

And people whose skin is a diff’rent shade,

You’ve got to be carefully taught.

You’ve got to be taught before it’s too late,

Before you are six or seven or eight,

To hate all the people your relatives hate,

You’ve got to be carefully taught!

What we call history – the agreed upon story of those in power – is being displayed in our collective mirror. Our chronicled past has left out major events, contributions, pain, anguish and suffering of those not in power. Let the reflections remind us of our selectively documented past and the power of the history we are creating today. Future generations are observing, experiencing, and learning from our words, intentions, and actions.

Let’s not waste this healing moment.
