Seed tomorrow with wise history telling today!

I just watched the unveiling of the Women’s Rights Pioneers statue in Central Park, the FIRST statue of real women in the 843 acres abundant with memorials. Since our daughter and her family live across the street from the park, Gramma and Grampa and our two beautiful grandsons recreate in the playground every time we’re in NYC. Our next visit will hopefully be sooner than later so we can stand in reverence before this tribute.

History isn’t what happens, it’s who tells the story.

Many are working diligently through power struggles, protests, and pain to turn pages in a new chapter of our collective past. I’m indebted to live in an era that is beginning to acknowledge the contributions of many who have been omitted, disregarded, unheard, or silenced until now.

Seed tomorrow with wise responsibility today!

The right to vote is the foundation of any democracy. Yet, the issue of voting rights in the United States, particularly the enfranchisement and disenfranchisement of specific groups, has been contested throughout our nation’s history.

Yesterday marked the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which guaranteed women the legal right to vote. It took decades before all women were actually able to exercise that right and one hundred years later we continue to work to ensure voting rights for all citizens. Yet, there a some who elect not to cast their ballot . . . really?  Sigh.

Voting is the expression of our commitment to ourselves, one another, this country, and this world.  ~ Sharon Salzberg

We have just over two months to prepare ourselves to vote. Yes, prepare. Read, research, get your head in the game, search for truth, challenge your thinking, and understand what’s at stake.  Each and every vote matters – the responsible and the reckless, the intelligently researched as well as the willingly ignorant, the ones consciously cast for the greater good and those focused on self-centered interests – they all matter.  Now is the time to prepare. Our democracy depends on it.

Seed tomorrow with wise reflection today!

Viola Davis – what a fierce force! I’m mesmerized by her work. As a master of her craft, she continually does her work to take the art form to an entirely new level.

In a recent interview, she spoke of being raised on a plantation, a family of sharecropper, living in extreme poverty. When the interviewer asked her if she ever looked back upon herself as a young girl she responded:

She is with me EVERY single day to remind me that life is to be celebrated. I think about that little girl every time I open the refrigerator, flush a toilet, turn on hot water or put on a robe . . . the elixir is living a life that is bigger than you. And, if you’re not doing that, you’re doing nothing.

Her competency as an actor is not the only thing that amazes and inspires me.

Seed tomorrow with wise continuation of good today!

Last week, Congressman, Freedom Rider and tireless advocate for others, John Lewis was laid to rest. Raised on a plantation, he, his parents and sibling lived long days, picking other people’s cotton.

At a young age, John, who didn’t take to farming, would hide under the front porch and beeline for the school bus when it made its stop. His mom, Willie Mae, supporting his intellectual curiosity told him, Once you get something in your head no one can take it away from you. So, learn he did.

Before passing, he wrote an article that was published the day of his funeral, entitled Together You Can Redeem the Soul of Our Nation. In it he wrote:

When historians pick up their pens to write the story of the 21st century, let them say it was your generation who laid down the heavy burdens of hate at last and that peace finally triumphed over violence, aggression over war.

Calling us to action in his eulogy, former President Barack Obama spoke:

Our country is a constant work in progress, to create a more perfect union . . . take up the unfinished work of the past.

Justice, inclusion, equity . . . It’s now our turn.
