Seed tomorrow with wise remembrance and honorable reverence today!
I’m struggling to put onto paper my thoughts about the passing of The Notorious Ruth Bader Ginsburg. I know what it is to carry picket signs in the late sixties and early seventies to call attention to injustices and inequities; however, changed legislature in what really makes the difference, right? People have fought diligently for so many things we take for granted today. RBG used the law to correct the rights of those who were written out of the “rights for all” in the Constitution.
She was a warrior for women who wanted to play sports in school, attend universities for which they were academically qualified, get jobs, consent to their own medical treatment, get a credit card or buy a house without a man’s signature. She fought for equal rights for widowers as well as widows for social security benefits (which many of us hope is not eliminated), educated law makers about the inequalities set by law and their impact on society. She was a tireless warrior for justice and intentionally nurtured relationships between parties and with colleagues who possessed opposing opinions in the spirit of civility and collaboration. Would not it be refreshing if current elected officials would learn from her example?
Although she seemed indestructible, ranked up there with our grandson’s super heroes, she was, in fact, human – just like us. And, as a colleague reminded me: Now, we are all RBG. To move forward, we must all be RBG. That doesn’t mean we must become attorneys, run for office, or necessarily aspire to become a judge, although, hopefully, many will. It does mean that We the People requires responsibility in the creation of a more perfect union. In RBG’s words:
If you want to be a professional, you will do something outside yourself, something to repair tears in your community. Something to make life a little better for people less fortunate than you. That’s what I think a meaningful life is – living not for oneself, but for one’s community.
