Seed tomorrow with wise decisions today

In my youth I heard: Voting is a civic sacrament. That notion has stayed with me ever since.

In record numbers, many of us have already cast our ballots; however, in case you haven’t, please consider Sharon Salzberg’s words:

Voting is the expression of our commitment to ourselves, one another, this country, and this world.

Or, Susan B. Anthony’s: Someone struggled for your right to vote. Use it.

And, then there’s Plato:

One of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors.

While making our voices heard at the polls and receiving the results that follow, please allow me to request that we demonstrate the character of this nation we honor and love by our respectful, patient, and safe behaviors. As public safety departments prepare for the worst, let’s revisit ourselves as the nation once held in high esteem throughout the world and let them observe people behaving their best.

Seed tomorrow with wise decency today

This week, seething with disgust, frustration, befuddlement, and anger watching non-stop tortuous political rhetoric, I was reminded of Maya Angelou’s words:

Hate, it has caused a lot of problems in the world, but has not solved one yet.

Our national culture is in trouble, big trouble. We’ve moved beyond division into plans to kidnap, try, and execute Governors and yelling “lock her up” at rallies. We’ve moved beneath dignity by reckless and dangerous attacks of our generals, department heads, departments, and services of our once honored US government. We’ve moved to new lows, calling the free press “the enemy of the people.” We’ve moved away from facts and science and criticize our world respected scientists like Dr. Fauci despite their lifetime commitment to public health and their work to keep us alive through a pandemic.

When our leaders cannot use behaviors that represent our culture as decent, noble, and collaborative, we must, with specific intent, treat each other with decency, honor and respect, demonstrating the true nature of the character of our nation.

Please, be kind and respectful. Be thoughtful and articulate about differences. Debate with civility and be open to listening and learning.  Please, for the sake of our nation, be the change, NOW!

Life is calling . . .  Today’s the day . . . Make this moment matter!!

Seed tomorrow with wise listening today

Every time I pick up one of The Dalai Lama’s works, I learn. Here’s a treasure:

When we talk, we are only repeating what we already know. When we listen, we may learn something new.

~ Note to self ~

I may not be aware of all my biases; however, I know I can only see and hear through the filters I’ve inherited, acquired, or developed. Therefore, in today’s divisive world, I need to listen more intensely, ask critical questions to understand, and continue to expand my understanding of what I do not know so I can make clearer the lens through which I make decisions.

Seed tomorrow with wise attention today

Something I heard on the radio yesterday made me pause. Respondents to a survey said they’d pay thousands of dollars for just one stress free day, describing themselves as strained, frazzled, and overwhelmed in their attempts to manage the realities of the pandemic we’re all experiencing.

Please, do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of Eileen McDargh’s new book, Burnout to Breakthrough: Building Resilience to Refuel, Recharge, and Reclaim What Matters. With a passion to help others, Eileen is a perceptive thinker, with decades of experience as a masterful coach, seminar leader, and keynote speakers as well as an astute author. As the World Health Organization classifies burnout as a health problem, Eileen’s understanding, questions, insights, stories, and suggestions can help you navigate through moments of feeling over-committed, overwhelmed, and over-tired through immediate steps to recognize and analyze issues, and take solution based steps to rebuild your spirit and reclaim what matter most. A sample:

Nothing, I repeat, nothing will help you move more steadily from burnout into breakout and eventual breakthrough than first paying attention to your body . . . to get to what matters most, we must STOP and pay attention . . . Until you stop and realize what is happening, what you think really matters might not!

Yes, these are challenging times. And, they may be calling us to redefine parts or perhaps the whole of our lives – to refuel, recharge and reclaim what matters most.

Life is calling . . .  Today’s the day . . . Make this moment matter!!
