Seed tomorrow with wise compassion today!
Like many of you, I can easily be glued to the TV to watch the Olympics. This year is extra special, since we get to watch with our grandchildren! There’s never been an opening ceremony that didn’t give me goose bumps. This year, the tears flowed as the Refugee Team joined the world’s athletes. It leaves me numb to think about people who must escape their homeland with the knowledge that their children face rape, induction into a tortuous army, trafficking, or murder if they stay.
Yet, their next challenge is the reality that they have nowhere to go. Today, few countries with open arms welcome these desperate families; many even promote a disdain for those attempting to escape, labeling them as dangerous and terrorists.
Refugees are not terrorists. They are often the first victims of terrorism.
~ António Manuel de Oliveira Guterres
Desperate parents often attempt to save their children by sending them on a long journey to possible safety, alone. No parent puts their child on a boat unless the water is safer than the land. No parent sends their child on a treacherous journey unless the reality of danger is frightfully present.
There’s no easy answer to the evil that refugees are trying to escape, nor the challenges of countries trying to help. However, compassion, an attempt to understand, and an extended heart rather than mislabeling and rejecting is at least a step in the right direction.
The world will not be destroyed by those who do evil, but by those who watch them without doing anything. ~ Albert Einstein
