Wednesday Wisdom

Seed tomorrow with wise compassion today!

Like many of you, I can easily be glued to the TV to watch the Olympics. This year is extra special, since we get to watch with our grandchildren! There’s never been an opening ceremony that didn’t give me goose bumps. This year, the tears flowed as the Refugee Team joined the world’s athletes. It leaves me numb to think about people who must escape their homeland with the knowledge that their children face rape, induction into a tortuous army, trafficking, or murder if they stay.

Yet, their next challenge is the reality that they have nowhere to go. Today, few countries with open arms welcome these desperate families; many even promote a disdain for those attempting to escape, labeling them as dangerous and terrorists.

Refugees are not terrorists. They are often the first victims of terrorism.

~ António Manuel de Oliveira Guterres

Desperate parents often attempt to save their children by sending them on a long journey to possible safety, alone.  No parent puts their child on a boat unless the water is safer than the land. No parent sends their child on a treacherous journey unless the reality of danger is frightfully present.

There’s no easy answer to the evil that refugees are trying to escape, nor the challenges of countries trying to help. However, compassion, an attempt to understand, and an extended heart  rather than mislabeling and rejecting is at least a step in the right direction.

The world will not be destroyed by those who do evil, but by those who watch them without doing anything.   ~ Albert Einstein

Seed tomorrow with wise recognition and appreciation today!

Happiness is typically defined as an emotional state characterized by feelings of joy, satisfaction, contentment, and fulfillment. Although it has many different definitions, its description usually includes positive emotions and life satisfaction.

The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts.

                                                                                               ~ Marcus Aurelius

So, what consumes your thinking all day long? Are you intentionally engaged in life’s moments? Have you developed the mental discipline to catch destructive thoughts early and send them on their way? How mindful and grateful are you for the blessings that surround you in your every-day-routine moments?

Enjoy.

Seed tomorrow with wise happiness today!

We say we want to be happy, right? Then, what stops us? We want to be happy, yet we often, and for some reason, consistently, engage in thoughts and behaviors that rob our joy.

One of many examples: we compare ourselves to others. What a grand contributor to unhappiness! And, have you noticed that we often evaluate ourselves against someone with a more developed skill, more mastery of something specific, or more ability in an area that we criticize ourselves about?

Constant comparisons to others and the seemingly happy lives they live is one of the most noxious sources of unhappiness. It’s time to stop any measuring up and begin a habit of acknowledging, honoring, admiring our own individual, unique strengths, skills, and talents, and begin to enjoy who we are, right?

Seed tomorrow with wise responsibilities today!

Barbeques, parades, and fireworks may be gone; however, our commitment to upholding our sacred democracy cannot. On this Fourth of July, Seth Godin posted this:

Freedom has a partner, and its name is responsibility.

It’s easy to insist on all the things we should be free from.

But then we realize that we also have the freedom to act, to lead and to confront our fear and our selfishness. Once we realize our own agency, freedom begins to feel like a responsibility.

The freedom to make a difference.

May the freedom and, more importantly, the responsibilities of the republic we share and the democracy we’ve chosen be sustained beyond the celebrations of the 4th.
