Seed tomorrow with wise happiness today!

Michael J. Fox first grabbed attention with his role in Family Ties, continuing hissuccess with popular films such as Back to the Future and Teen Wolf.  While working on the sitcom Spin City, he publicly disclosed that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. In the decades that followed, and despite worsening symptoms, he continued to act and do voice-over work while advocating for people living with the disease. Perhaps as a result of his circumstances he stated:

My happiness grows in direct proportion to my acceptance, and in inverse proportion to my expectations.

Every human has their challenges; some more demanding than others. It might be beneficial to reexamine our relationship with expectations and our ability to accept.

Seed tomorrow with wise doing today!

James Dean, a hot actor in my youth, starred in the film adaptation of the John Steinbeck novel East of Eden, for which he received a posthumous Oscar Award. Later, he played a cultural icon of teenage disillusionment and social estrangement, in the title of his most celebrated film, Rebel Without a Cause, in which he starred as troubled teenager.

Killed in a tragic car accident at the tender age of 24, James understood a wisdom beyond his years:

The gratification comes in the doing, not in the results.

Fully experience the tasks, the responsibilities, the boring routines, the repetitive practice of what it is we do. This will not only inject increased, intentional joy into the process, it welcomes us to simply savor the expedition of experiences rather than fixate on production. Profound learning I wish I understood earlier.

Seed tomorrow with wise openness today!

Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi, was the third prime minister of India, as well as the first, and to date, the only woman to hold the position. A powerful government figure and competent mediator, she was often asked to host negotiations between reluctant parties. With an understanding that even when there’s animosity, an agreement can be reached if both sides are willing to listen and shake hands, she knew the first step is to extend an open hand.

We can only move forward after letting go of anger. You cannot shake hands with a clenched fist.

A tough lesson that doesn’t seem to be practiced enough in today’s politics. And, who cannot benefit from its application in our everyday lives?

Seed tomorrow with wise liberty today!

A brief glance of what’s happening around the world reminds a thinking person of how fragile freedom and the democratic process truly are. As we celebrated our Independence Day with barbeques and brews I hope we also pondered our individual responsibilities to sustain the freedom we currently enjoy in our fine nation and the danger it faces on a daily basis.

In our beginning, we had George Washington to guide us:

Liberty, when it begins to take root, is a plant of rapid growth.

And, grow we did. Now, it’s all too easy to forget the required protection of our liberties.

Freedom, in any case, is only possible by constantly struggling for it.  Albert Einstein

Freedom requires responsibility. Accountability and answerability to ourselves and others set the standards by which we live as a civilization.

For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.   ~ Nelson Mandela

Let freedom ring. Yet, it will only toll when we ensure its reverberation.
