Seed tomorrow with wise wealth today!

Curt and I are working in Grand Cayman this week. What a remarkable island of beauty – and what stunning ocean views. In the middle of feeling exceptionally grateful, I remember Henry David Thoreau words:

Wealth is the ability to fully experience life.

It’s so easy to breathe in the experience of here! Yet, life isn’t always filled with such loveliness. Have you ever noticed yourself taking “little” things for granted or not noticing them at all? Do you currently have access to clean drinking water? To electricity? The Internet? To food? Last night, did you have an option other than sleeping outside on the ground? Are you able to read? Are you loved and loving?

Some may say you are incredibly wealthy. Others may benefit from a shift in perspective. Increasing awareness and gratefulness of what is gives us the opportunity to more fully experience the life right in front of us.

Seed tomorrow with wise presence with others today!

Last night I saw a commercial that went something like this:

Not long ago, people visited each other in their homes rather than on their homepages, their door bells rang rather than their cell phones, and neighbors knew what it meant to be neighborly.

May you enjoy the Memorial Day holiday weekend. And, I hope you have some face time with people you love.

Seed tomorrow with wise revivification today!

Last weekend we played with our precious grandson, Reid Thomas, in NYC for an entire 3 days! In the midst of all the joy, eventually, it’s always time to pack up and head for the subway to return home. On the way to LaGuardia we were entertained by signs on the N train:

Only the boring get bored

Be more interesting tomorrow than you are today

Do something today that your future self will thank you for

Like many of you, every Spring I ponder revitalization, renewal and re-birth. Easter is this coming weekend (and Reid is coming to Michigan for the holiday!) so resurrection will be deeply contemplated for many of us. These subway messages give me fertilizer with which to cultivate the pondering. Hope they plants some seeds for you as well.

Seed tomorrow with wise happy-looking today!

So many times, with splendid serendipity, I cross paths with messages I need to reflect upon in that very moment. Here’s one I recently stumbled upon in a very unlikely place:

Being happy doesn’t mean everything is perfect. It means you have decided to look beyond the imperfections.

I’m certain I need to execute this thought. And, you?

Seed tomorrow with wise Halloween-ing today!

Happy Halloween!!! How did this holiday creep up so fast – again! We’ll blink and it’ll be Thanksgiving! I read that Halloween was originally a time to mark the end of summer and the bountiful harvest as well as the beginning of winter and a commemoration of the passing of the dead. The Celts believed that the spirits of harvest and ghosts of those who had passed visited Earth on October 31st. And, there are some who preach about the dark side of the day.

Isn’t Halloween evening a blast? I simply love to be at a home bombarded with a multitude of children donned in innovative costumes, especially those designed by resourcefulness. What fun to hear “trick or treat” from chocolate cheeks schlepping pillow cases over-stuffed with candy. And, how about those little ones who become someone else underneath the mask? Erma Bombeck wrote,

A grandmother pretends she doesn’t know who you are on Halloween.

Thank you, Erma, for reminding us of the lighter side of life. Rather than the “dark” side of anything, it would be great to remember to dance in the joy, pretend, glory, resourcefulness and fun of this day as a reminder to enjoy all the rest of them as well.

Seed tomorrow with wise rocking today!

Perhaps it’s because I’m currently trying to figure out how to get my antique rocking chair to New York City so our daughter and soon-to-be-born grandchild can enjoy the same comfort of holding, rocking and singing I did so many years ago. Or, maybe because I needed a break in a long day, reading this sign in someone’s office made me smile. Whatever it was, the message gave me a moment of delight:

Worrying is like a rocking chair, it gives you something to do, but it doesn’t get you anywhere.

So, it’s probably best to know when to rock and relax . . . and when to rock and roll!

Seed tomorrow with wise transformation today!

Our daughter’s baby shower was Sunday. We served a lovely tea party with all the fixings. The scones and clotted cream were a hit; however, I think the wonderful inclusion of hats and gloves worn by party members made the day!

In the midst of an amazing time in her life, it was surreal to watch this beautiful woman I one gave birth to, now with child, graciously listening to stories and advise from seasoned women with a shared sacredness. And, I couldn’t help but remember Rajneesh’s words that took my breath away when I was pregnant with her:

The moment a child is born the mother is also born. The woman existed, but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new.

And, the transformation seems an evolutionary process, consistently progressing through the pregnancy, culminating in labor and birth. So, the birth day is a nativity for two life forms (and for some men, make that three!)

Seed tomorrow with wise seasonal choices today!

I’m working in Michigan this week, so I’m really happy to have been home for our little one’s 32nd birthday! We adventured out to Mackinac Island for an early celebration last weekend. Then, I got to see her on her actual birth day (let’s face it, I remember that day more than she does!)

As I savor memories of watching her grow into herself, I can’t help but think about the seasons of change required by life for all of us to reach maturity. As her mom, I got chills as I observed the choices and changes she made as she approached her summer. And, I’m happy for and proud of her for so many reasons. One that most impresses me is how courageously she’s handled the “winters” of her life thus far.

Winters come regularly and are often stormy, solitary and frigid accompanied by expanded feelings of emptiness. Some may be easy; however, many are long and treacherous as they challenge us with distress, disappointment, discontent, disillusionment, and often, devastation. During those times its hard to remember that spring is soon to come with its thaw and new life.

At a relatively young age, Amanda has been forced to face a few winters deeply steeped with turbulent circumstances, bitter-cold emotions and oppressive endings. I know she would rather have ripped the icy months off her calendar. Yet, I watched her put on her metaphorical snow shoes and take the long, lonely trek through the drifts, crossing over to her next “spring” stronger, with more compassion, endurance and wisdom.

Let us love winter, for it is the spring of genius. ~ Pietro Aretino

In life, our daughters have been my two best teachers. And, when it comes to challenge, faith and determination in life’s phases, Amanda has reminded me that we can’t change the seasons of our life; however, we can change ourselves. Happy Birthday, Sweetness!

Seed tomorrow with wise dancing today!

After my last day of work in Sydney, I was blessed to enjoy a few days with a treasured friend, Catherine Palin-Brinkworth, who is also an exceptional coach, consultant and professional speaker. We enjoyed inspiring conversations, shared provocative questions and challenging, yet hopeful thoughts for the future.

Sunday, we explored the Tamborine Mountains, not far from Catherine’s home on Hope Island (great name for an island, hey!?!) We strolled through charming shops and had a yummy lunch in a sweet little area called The Gallery Walk.

One shop we stumbled across was stuffed with a plethora of signs. We walked in and immediately read:
If you’ve been waiting for a sign, this is it.

And, my eyes then landed on another:
Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass – it’s about learning to dance in the rain.

Ah, to be able to rumba with joy, rhythm and grace in the middle of pandemonium . . . what a delightful thought . . . someday, I thought, someday!

Seed tomorrow with wise character today!

I worked in Washington DC last week. And, it was great fun since my husband, Curt, joined me. While I worked during the day he adventured out to explore where we’d both go in the late afternoons and evenings. Starting at The Mall, he explored monuments and museums. The first day he returned with pictures and quotations that included this one by Martin Luther King, Jr:

The ultimate measure of a man if not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.

And, of course, that’s not gender specific! It seems real significance lives beyond comfort and convenience. Isn’t it relatively easy to demonstrate admirable behaviors when things are going well? However, our real character, individually, and as a nation, is revealed in the midst of disappointment, danger and disaster. So, in the middle of those moments, perhaps its best to stop and breathe long enough to remember to walk through them with grace.
